The American Revolution was a war for consolidation. Prior to gaining independence from Britain, the American colonies were under different social classes. This brought distress amongst the poor because they were the ones who suffered the most. To counter that, many groups combined to form unification to break their alliance from Britain. In chapter 4 of Tyranny is Tyranny, he states, “In North Carolina, a “regulator Movement” of white farmers was organized against wealthy and corrupt officials in the period from 1766 to 1771” (Zinn). These group of people were oppressed by the rich. The “Regulators” resented the tax system making adjustments to new laws that were in favor for them. This is significant because this is where the beginning of…
Thomas Paine, author of The American Crisis, addresses the common people with little control over their community and who are frightened for the war; the colonist men know that they are risking their land and family by going to war. Paine writes this pamphlet to lift the spirits of the colonists during the time of the Revolution. Paine identifies the impact of individual faults versus group wrongdoings to demonstrate how society punishes some and pardons others. This claim ultimately enforces the central claim that the colonists need to fight, even when the larger group is stronger and more resilient, in order to become independent and free.…
Every year, my summer consist of my family and I traveling around the states. Boston Massachusetts, was one of the states that built the love and appreciation I have for nature. The Boston Tea Party Museum was located between Congress St and Seaport Blvd. The city its self was appealing. Trees and flowers you’d Normally see on the TV, Big Houses with paintings so bright you think it was painted every-week.The lawns was tidy, plantings and the trees were clipped to purity. Where I was standing, the sidewalks were smooth and clean. No cracks, no unruffled spots. It was the most errorless town I had ever seen. The museum was a long way from the neighbor I was at. The drive didn’t seem like it was half an hour; more like couple of minutes. From…
Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure - and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine 0 God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing - perfectly willing - to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt.…
I arranged for the Sons of Liberty, led by Paul Revere, to storm a British ship full of tea cargo and dump it into the water below. This drove the colonies into the brink of war because every time a British ship would enter the Boston Harbor, the tea cargo would be confiscated and dumped overboard. The revolution began in full swing as I represented Massachusetts in the first continental congress where I argued strongly for the separation of the separation of the colonies from British rule. I helped guide congress towards issuing the declaration of independence, and was one of the 56 signers of our nations glorified document of…
Last year, I was one of three high school Juniors chosen by my local electric cooperative to join students from across Arkansas in a trip to Washington D.C. During this trip, our group visited all the usual tourist spots in Washington: the Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Smithsonian among others. But of the sites we visited, the ones that affected me most were the places related to President Thomas Jefferson. Previous to this trip, I knew very little about Jefferson, and even wondered what he did to deserve a place on Mount Rushmore. However, this trip exposed me to Jefferson in an entirely new way. We visited Monticello, his home in Virginia, where I learned about Jefferson’s broad interests in science, architecture, and philosophy,…
There have been countless speeches made throughout the course of time; some that have managed to change laws and mindsets, and others who have simply expressed a logical opinion or proposed a vengeful disputation. However, amongst these varying disquisitions, only a few have managed to remain memorable. By using various literary devices, one particular man was able to remain in the memories of many, and deliver one of the most famous patriotic speeches in our country’s history. In his eloquent speech to the Virginia Convention of 1775, Patrick Henry persuasively argues that the American people have simply no choice than to engage in war against Britain by reminding them that it is inevitable, and by making it apparent that we can either choose to live a life in pure liberty or perpetual captivity.…
The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…
In 1752 I was a seventeen year old destitute living in Scotland, Ireland. I had no real skill-trade or education, but with high ambitions to learn and become a collective dependant I would earn a stable lively-hood in one of the New World colonies. I suffered losses of loved who fell sick and died with only a few remaining that were as impoverished as myself. I feared there would be no prospect of a better life in Scotland and contracted myself as an indentured servant for passage to the New World colonies. Along with many others I boarded a New World merchant ship that specialized in the trade of textiles and clothing. In exchange for travel, food, and decent health, I was sold for profit to proprietors in the New World. The voyage to New…
My whole symbol revolves around an American flag because I am American. On stripes area of the flag I put the sports that I play every year, which are basketball, football, baseball, and track. If you look inside the track symbol you will see the number 400 because I run 400’s in track. The basketball is the biggest and in the middle because it is my favorite sport to play. If you follow the sports counter clock wise around the flag you will find the order of my favorite sports. I like basketball because you get to run a lot and it could get physical. I like football because you get to tackle kids without getting in trouble. The reason I do track is to travel to towns with your friends and to get the feeling of winning. I enjoy playing baseball…
The American Revolution was characterized by a series of social and political shifts that occurred in American society as new republican ideals took hold in the gentry of the colonies. This time period was distinguished by sharp political debates between radicals (mudwumps) and moderates over the role that democracy should play in a government. This broad new American shift to republicanism and a new found support of democracy was a cataclysm to the traditional social hierarchy which characterized old mixed government in the Americas. This new republican ethic forced in a new age of American political values.…
It’s Tuesday in mid-September. The temperature is getting cooler, the leaves starting to color, the American consumer settling into his usual habits as the academic calendar begins its latest cycle.…
What caused the little country to voice its mighty roar and take on the world giant? The timing of the American Revolution was right for both the colonists and the British subjects in England. For the colonists, they felt that they did not have a voice in Parliament and the laws and taxes that Parliament passed on to them were unfair, unjust and illegal. This was the being of the frustration felt by the colonists, but it had not yet reached the boiling point. When Parliament passed the 1763 Proclamation, which stated that the colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains, The Stamp Tax, and the now ever-present standing army, this was the last straw, which caused the colonists to rebel. At this same time, the British subjects in England began to feel that the colonies were becoming too much of a drain on their financial system and were causing their taxes to go higher to support the safety and control of the colonies. As individual colonies,…

Revolutionary. It means involving or causing a complete or dramatic change. The Revolutionary war was revolutionary because the greatest army in the world (Great Britain) at the time was defeated by only thirteen colonies and it was the first time any country had enforced democracy. First of all, only thirteen colonies beat the world's greatest army. When the other countries heard about this they were surprised. Second of all, was that the States enforced democracy. Democracy was only written by John Locke but no one ever thought of actually using as a government. This seems to me like the war caused a complete or dramatic change. Therefore the Revolutionary War was very revolutionary not only to the people it changed, but also the whole world. But anyway let’s go in a little deeper.…
