Personal Narrative: My Different Masks

My Different Masks When I was a student in high school I had a few friends that would gossip and spread rumors every day during lunch about certain kids at school. They would share the details about the scandal at the table and they would criticize them without pity. In other school settings, the critics would speak kindly to those they judged with an air of grace and elegance. Since I had witnessed their changing faces, I wondered if they had ever behaved the same way towards me. Although I was confused about the relationship I had with them, I soon realized that people?s personalities are not always set in stone. People adapt for each situation and they take on a different persona to be able to cope with the setting. For example,

I preferred to look right through him because I wanted to protect my hopeless romantic self and avoid getting hurt. Other times when I was around my crush, I was helplessly shy and quiet. I would get nervous for no reason and lose my train of thought. Usually I mumbled when I talked and immediately had nothing interesting to tell him. Other times, I changed drastically and became overconfident. I suppose I wanted to impress my crush and I wanted him to give me his undivided attention. Every instance I came across my crush proved to me that I was never really myself. I changed several times throughout my experiences with my crush and I altered my self-identity by wearing a mask above it. Since I was a student volunteer in high school, I came across moments where I had to perform public duties. My English class visited a nursing home on the week of Valentine?s during my sophomore year. My friends and I toured the …show more content…
People act in unique ways due to different beliefs and cultures. Someone?s upbringing, decisions they?ve made, and relationships formed with people can also shape a person?s character. Humans are complex organisms that constantly adapt from learned experiences to conform to different situations.
My upbringing is one of the major influences that has affected who I am. My parents taught me to be respectful and compassionate when meeting people. Many significant decisions I?ve had to make regarding personal life and education have also impacted my character. Every choice is a learning experience that will help me analyze the possibilities of my future. Witnessing my so called friends criticizing fellow classmates helped me realize that people usually pretend to be someone they are not. Many individuals play positive and negative roles throughout their lives, disguising their true identity from themselves as well as other people that they

Trying to live another person's life or try to copy another person's life will never work and it won't even suit the person who's copying. Eventually, it starts dissolving. However, if a person just be themselves and show the world what type of person they are, then they should not have any problems. People would more likely start to appreciate them in the way they are. People would also behave with that person more properly and also respect them a bit more, and similarly to how they are presenting them self to others. Every person that I have met in my life has had a different behavior. I have a friend, she's a really nice as a person but, she has a behavioral problem. Which is she shows a lot of attitude to everyone and she would never talk to anyone unless that person comes talks to her. If someone comes and talks to her she will be the nicest person ever and she will stop showing them attitude. This behavior of her makes people think oh she's so rude and people thinks that she doesn't like them. Even with teachers, she shows attitude. Because of this sometimes in the beginning of the school year if the teacher never knew her then the teacher tells her to be nice and stop being so rude. This shows her personality and it impact on other people's thinking and how it changes other people's thinking about…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

It can be inferred that learning from others has become the default form of learning in today’s society. We as humans acquire new intelligence every day, potentially without realizing such. Growing up, a child will attend school; there they will focus on developing the skills of a student: taking notes, memorization, performance, and others. In addition to this, children will also learn social skills, such as being a friend, or being a bully. Growing into adulthood, these children will develop their own sense of identity; choosing their style, friends, likes, and dislikes. As many Hollywood movies depict, cliques begin to form. This being a network of friends who share the same interests and features in common, many times resisting others…

My mother, sister, and I were driving down Highway 124 on a hot July day when my mom screamed and slammed on the breaks. Fear rushed through our bodies. Outside the car window, a short young African American man was launched into the air. As he came down, a loud boom sounded as his body helplessly rolled off the hood of the faint green Toyota Corolla in front of us. The man lay motionless in the road while we waited for what seemed like hours for the driver to exit the car. His red shirt and gym shorts were ripped. The driver of the opposing car threw the vehicle in reverse in a spasmodic action in an attempt to end the man’s life. The injured man made an effort to crawl onto the Wendy’s sidewalk, forcing his body up on the curb to evade the car. The driver drove up onto the curb and blew its tire, just barely missing the wounded man. Realizing the driver would stop at nothing, my mother drove her white suburban in front of the car, blocking the violent perpetrator from doing any further damage.…

Her eyes glistened with a repulsive gleam of a smile on her face. I walked slowly hearing the whispering of my socks against the floor. It was that time again, piano lesson. Mrs. Zhang looked at me and smirked eerily. I sighed and took my place on the on the bench, close enough to smell my teacher. I put my shaking hands on the keys and began.…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

My story beings like any other, at the moment I took my first breath on July 30th 1998 in Bilisht, Albania. I was born in a small town in the lower region of Albania where my entire family lived with my grandparents under one household. My parents soon came to the realization that the current living situation was incongruous for a new family, such as ours, to thrive. As the result, my parents chose to apply for the government program granting our family access to move into a completely new society with new laws, regulations, political aspects and that was tens of thousands of miles away. Our family, at that instant, had a struck of luck as my mother’s name was drawn for us to move to the greatest country the United States of America.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…

Growing up with divorced parents from two radically different cultures was at first difficult. My mother’s family was from Peru, while my father’s was from Bangladesh. In my young mind, there was an internal struggle with what my identity actually consisted of. I wasn’t wholly from one culture or the other, and felt like a black sheep when interacting with either side of my family. Due to this, I attempted to keep these cultures partitioned. At the time, they were different portions of my life that simply couldn’t intermix. This mentality in turn led me to foolishly shy away from my joint heritage. I kept myself enclosed in a box, blind to the beauty of my surrounding culture. However, as time progressed, I knew I had to make a change in my understanding.…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

I hide, but not in the shadows, I hide behind a mask. This is me about to divulge my story, so please read on reader. I believe that finding true freedom a person’s mask will fall off. I always told myself as a kid to keep the mask on or else I might get hurt. I do not really know where this type of thinking came from. The mask only came off when I was in the safety of my own room. For years, I stay behind my fake face waiting and watching the world in silence until the day I could take the mask off in public. I realize that taking off my mask was a risk, but it is worth seeing the world and not feeling the need to hide. That day finally came, when the sun is shinning on my back, the wind whipping through my hair and the mask fell off my face.…

Most students in middle school or in high school will experience a time period called rebellious time. Students at that time regard their teachers as enemies by ignoring teachers’ advice, and only listen to their friends who they think can understand them. So friends become consequential to them. I have a cousin named Qiao, who has a group of excellent friends around him. At the time when he became rebellious, his friends talked to him patiently and brought him to the right track of life. However, there is a number of news reported in the newspaper that teenagers are led to wrong ways by their friends who…
