Personal Narrative: My Failure In Calculus
It was 11:02am and I already smelled my garlic breath. I needed to get up and brush my teeth as I knew that my bladder would burst soon if I stayed. But I didn’t. Still, I lay there, as my emotions took over and ignored all my bodies’ physical signals. Sweat was sprinkled on my skin, while my Hello Kitty pillows were deluged with tears. It had been nearly three hours since I was awake, but still as a statue I was, as my soft, brown skin would rather be showered with bodily fluids because I was thinking about my failure. My failure in Calculus.

Two months earlier, I speculated how exciting it would be to challenge myself, and I pronounced how great of a challenge it would be to spend my summer taking an online-based Calculus class through Frederick Community College, and I desired how I wanted to take a risk out of my boundaries, so I registered. Most importantly, I wanted to take a risk for my mom. Despite the countless late nights staying up until 2:00am, with the help of

Just as she protested in the streets in Yangon for democracy, I get my voice known in the United Nations International Peace Day video contest. Just as she spoke in front of hundreds of crowds to convince citizens to end the military dictatorship of Ne Win, I convince ordinary people to donate money to an end for pediatric cancer with my involvement in the Four Diamonds Fund. She held large gatherings for democracy in her own home state of Chin, while I organize a gardening program at the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County to educate underrepresented minority kids about the importance of environmental conservatism and responsibility. I take risks and strive to excel in them so that I can reimburse my mother for the sacrifices she has done. The blood, sweat and tears she stretched to come to the land of the free. I wanted her to know that she was not

It was a bright sunny Wednesday afternoon and I was walking towards my car. I got out of class early and was heading home to get myself ready to spend time with my bright and intelligent students. Sometimes when I get out of class my body feels overwhelmed and tired. Perhaps it feels this way because of all the things that are going on in my life like family, friendship, relationship, community service, and homework assignments. I feel like I am very busy that I often do not have time for myself. However when I arrived to El Jardin that quickly changes. The students that I work with on Wednesday fill my life with positive attitude and energy that I often forget about the worries and stress that I encounter during the day. I really love my Wednesday shift more than my Tuesday shift because I have a stronger connection and attachment towards the two girls that I work with. On Wednesday’s, I work with two bright and intelligent 6th grade girls named Arisa and Janet. Both of them have special qualities and a sweet kind heart.…

Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…

Today, I interviewed my calculus teacher, Muiny Somaya. I interviewed her because I was interested in knowing what her interests were and how she viewed her experiences in school. It was interesting to get perspectives on particular topics, such as what was her most difficult class she had taken in school. To my surprise, she didn’t respond multivariable calculus or organic chemistry assuming she had taken it. Instead, she responded literature! She told me the hardest part about topics like literature is that the answers aren’t straightforward. Many people can have different perspectives on works of literature, therefore leading to different responses. She prefers short stories and poems that are easy to read without confusing jargon that takes…

In fourth grade, I was given a homework assignment of the worst nature my nine-year-old brain could envision: an essay. My entire class erupted with sighs and groans as my teacher explained the assignment: interview someone you know and write a biography. I was stumped; I didn't think anyone in my family was interesting. I didn’t have an uncle that was a firefighter or cousin that was an astronaut. I had absolutely no idea who to write about. At dinner that night, my parents suggested I interview my grandfather. With no alternatives in mind, I unenthusiastically accepted their suggestion. The following Friday night, my parents drove me to my grandparents’ house with a pencil and a notebook, and I sat down with my grandfather as he told me the story of how he came to America.…

One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

Math has always been difficult for me. I have struggled with how to figure out problems and how I can do my best in math class. I was really worried about my grade in math because I wanted to succeed in all my classes in order to get accepted to my first college choice. I started figuring out the math problems in my head and practicing them at home.I used my calculator and computer to help me to solve my math problems. I soon found out that Math wasn't as difficult as I thought it was because I had learned the steps to solve the equations. No matter how difficult the problems were, I always persevered through them. That is how I learned that no matter how hard something is, with practice and repetition you can achieve your best potential.…

In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties. When I took math I, I mostly got B’s and C’s on my tests, because I had a hard time understanding the material, or asking the teacher if I needed help with a certain concept. Overall, I think my average grade for math would be a B, but I would like to improve this year and get an A for a final grade. My parents definitely contributed to my overall success. If I didn’t have their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I disliked learning trigonometry and graphing functions. I took math II online, so I wasn’t able to really use a worksheet and graph any problems for myself. I liked the substitution…

I never came kindly to the subject of Math. Math was always about constant rote memorization, full of extensive redundant notes that always found their way stuffed into the folds of my notebook never to be seen again. I held onto this impression the entire duration of ninth grade. However, upon a simple happenstance of acquiring the right math teacher with a different approach to math, I became increasingly aware of my previous errors in thinking. Everything was not as unyielding and tedious as I thought it was. Experiencing a teacher with a powerful new perspective altered my rigid frame of thinking, allowing me to excel in math.…

The only below average grade I have gotten in my life happened last year in Pre-AP Pre-Calculus. Math had been my strong suit for as long as I could remember, and I was devastated when I got my final report card. Knowing that my senior year was approaching fast, I had to change my plans. I switched from AP Calculus to AP Statistics, because I learned that branch of mathematics was not for me. Currently I am earing an A- in “Stats” and understanding the material very well. As an added bonus, statistics is great for individuals entering into a field of marketing or…

You’d like after watching cheerleading movies daily since I could walk and doing cartwheels and splits, and much different cheer moves all day I’d be some good. Well, that was not quite the case. Although I wasn’t terrible I cheered for minor leagues in my younger years. Somehow things changed in middle school I didn’t make the team.…

If only I had taken my time on the test, I might have gotten a better grade. Failing my math test came as a big shock to me but helped me realize that I need to take my time and not rush. When you rush through an assignment, you are prone to make simple mistakes that you might not have made if you would have taken your time. I have noticed when I rush through a math assignment I will make simple calculation errors or write the answer in the wrong format. If I had slowed down a bit, I could have saved myself points on simple calculation errors. There is a fable by Aesop that is often used in stories relating to time it is The Tortoise and the Hare. The tortoise took his time and went through the race at his normal pace instead of rushing. The…

Today was terrible. It started out as any other typical day living at college. As a kid, I did’nt try in my work, or study for test. Because it was just me and my mom and she was always working and never checked my work, so I always goofed off. As my mom started dating, she found a guy and married him. He started noticing what i was doing and helped me with my work. This was a new concept for me, so all we did was argue. As years came by I started focusing on my school work and actually trying, atho I kept getting missing assignments and not doing great for I kept trying. In seventh grade, I still got missing assignments. This year I got more organized and planned things out, I started studying more, I did my homework more, and never really got any missing assignments. Of the 75% of students who graduate high school and finish their required 13 years of schooling, I believe that I have taken it to the next level. Looking back at my past years of schooling, I see a lot of moments where I excelled and that I can be proud of and yet, hidden deep in the files of my educational life, I can see moments where I messed up. Only later on did I recognize that I could have done better. One such moment occurred recently, in junior year, when I almost failed Pre-Calculus.…
