Personal Narrative: My Father Keith Coffey
The person who has influenced me the most throughout my life is my dad Keith Coffey. He has influenced me the most because he has always shown perseverance no matter what comes his way. His admirable traits are what help shape me into the person I am today. Eight years ago my dad was in an accident that paralyzed him from the chest down. Most people would consider this to be the worst thing that could happen to a person, but for my dad he was able to adapt and find new ways to keep doing the things he loved. I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

My Grandpa John is 69 years old, and has experienced many different social issues during his life, so I decided to interview him. In his prime, my grandpa served in the military which allowed him to move often around the United States, and the world. I knew he had a lot of experience due to the military, and he was quite the storyteller. I knew it would be easy to talk to him about different social issues throughout his life. As we sat down we talked about many things, but the two ideas that really stuck out to me were the Vietnam War and the Space Race.…

I rehabbed all year, working with a AT in Vancouver by the name of Clayton Cross, working with him even then furthered my desire to become an athletic therapist. I saw him working with top class athletes from football to NHL players, this ignited the fire inside of me feeling as though I had finally found my passion, something that I knew I would be as dedicated and committed to as I was to my sports. I had just started coming into my finals week of the spring semester when I had received a call about my father, he had gone into kidney failure and we didn’t know if he was going to make it. I was rushed home with an exam in little under a week. Not only adding stress to my injury that was yet to be healed, my own father was maybe not going to make it.…

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…
