Personal Narrative: My First Day At Camp Able
“Making the impossible possible,” that was Camp Able’s motto. Camp Able is a 4-5 day long summer camp session for people with special needs. It allows volunteers to come and be a one-on-one counselor to the campers. Camp Able changed my life because it opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking. Camp Able allowed me to expand my opinions on many different things. It gave me a better purpose in life, along with memories that I will never forget. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into, but that didn’t stop me from going.
My first day at Camp Able was full of confusion. We started with a rundown of worst case scenarios such as what to do during a seizure and so forth. There was a lot being thrown at me and I was worried that I would

I had never met any of these people before, but I could just see the happiness radiating off of each of them. I was originally not assigned to anyone. They had planned for me to be a floater and help people that needed it, but a camper in my cabin, Justin, was just a little too much for his counselor, so they asked me to take over. I was honestly very excited. My nervousness had completely evacuated my system when Justin and I started talking. Justin was 24 and was physically able with slight mental issues, but he was very entertaining for the other campers. I can’t tell you how many times he talked about sneaking out to see his new “girlfriend” he had made earlier that day. Justin’s cabin mates thought he was a hoot and it was great to see them get along. That was the greatest part about Camb Able. It was never about doing what you wanted, or talking to who you wanted to, it was always about the camper. I know that may seem a little intense and unpleasant, but when a camper comes to you and tells you how much they are enjoying camp and being with you, it is a pure bliss. Knowing how greatly you can impact a life by only spending 4 days with someone is life-changing. Another amazing thing about Camp Able is that realizing we are all the

Friday. T minus 15 hours till the last day of camp. The Saturday volunteer cancelled. My game plan was crumpled up and trashed. “Why hadn’t I thought of backup plan?” I asked myself, on the verge of pulling out my hair. I hadn’t taken into account all the variables and now I was receiving the repercussions. I had no idea becoming the Transportation Coordinator for a camp would be so stressful.…

An often forgotten aspect of the home front, the United States detained more than 400,000 Axis prisoners in rural camps during the war. According to the provisions as agreed upon by the Geneva Convention, POWs could work if they received pay and their employment did not contribute directly to the war effort. To help alleviate the severe shortage of workers in the United States, tens of thousands of the former enemy combatants labored on farms and in canneries and mills.31…

I have gone to Camp Sierra Vista for the past eight years of my life. Camp has taught me many things. How to be myself, how to work well with others, how to have fun, and mainly how to be a leader. I was never really one to be a leader of a group at school, but at camp, I was.…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

Officers in the field lived much better than enlisted men. They generally assigned one or two officers to a tent. Since they provided their own personal gear, items varied greatly and reflected individual taste. Each junior officer was allowed one trunk of personal belongings that was carried in one of the baggage wagons. Higher-ranking officers were allowed more baggage. Unlike infantrymen, who slept and sat on whatever nature provided, officers sometimes had the luxury of furniture.…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

I’m on a trip with my mom to Yellowstone; our first destination is Salt Lake City, Utah’s Capital. As we walking around the city, we went to a place called Temple Square. All the tourists who came here are going there. It talks about some story of Jesus, and it looks like a church. Tomorrow, our destination is going into Yellowstone, the real journey will start tomorrow.…

For many Americans, going to a summer sleep-away camp as a child is an experience to be treasured well into adulthood. Present and former campers often speak of the experiences and the friendships that resulted from their time at sleep-away camp as some of the most important and meaningful ones of their lives. Critics, however, often view summer sleep-away camps in a very different way, insisting that they are elitist and that the children who are sent there miss out on valuable bonding time with their parents and the friends who live in their hometowns.…

At a normal summer camp, a few dozen fifteen-year-old girls wouldn’t be told to spend a night alone in the woods. Camp Cheerio isn’t a normal summer camp. I’ve been going to Camp Cheerio every summer since I was eight years old, and I’ve loved every second of being there. The summer before sophomore year of high school was the last year that I could be a camper. Part of being in your last year as a camper is doing CREW. The acronym “CREW” stands for Courage, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, and Worth. In CREW all of the last year campers do things such as team building, being a counselor for a day, hiking eleven miles to and from Stone Mountain, and more. However, the most significant part of CREW was doing Solo Night. During Solo Night, each…

Nonetheless, through the challenges, I discovered strengths in myself. I have always been mainly a follower because I am easy to get along with. At times this quality has hurt me, but during my time at the camp I was transformed into a leader. The group of volunteers I was working with were not as motivated or passionate as they could have been. I could not do all the work myself, so I took my stand as a leader and motivated the dietary staff team to do their best work. I used my voice to delegate tasks to efficiently get them done, as well as pushing with perseverance when I was beyond the point of exhaustion.…

The camp consisted of girls from all over the world, including Kenya and Brunei. At the age of 13, I traveled from North Carolina to India independently. Traveling alone gave me the opportunity to spend time with myself, and rely on myself. It gave me a sense of pride and contentment. I had experienced loneliness most of my life, but it was different when I was sitting alone in an airport for 12 hours at such a young age. The traveling experience itself helped me mature and become more…

With the thought of summer camp comes the recollection of cabins filled overstuffed with bunk beds, campfires, and mess hall meals with the loads of friends we met at the opening dance. Summer camp is a childhood memory for many of us, one that changed our youth, usually for the better. Such camp memories and activities still hold true today, even for children with disabilities. The inclusive classroom that takes place during the school year has now begun to carry over into the summer months at camps across the country, whether they be overnight for the whole summer, day camps or weekend camps.…

Growing up in a sheltered lifestyle, not worrying about were my next meal would arrive from, or whether if I was going to live throughout the night was never on my mind until I learned from the experiences of the people throughout my missionary trip in India. It was an unforgettable experience that altered my life, and left a lasting impression on me. I had volunteered at a psychiatric housing home which housed over hundred plus people who were all mental ill. My missionary group and I had spent a month living with the patients, assisting them in any way possible, but most importantly seeing their point of view on life through their eyes.…
