On Saturday, November 4, the team participated in a scrimmage against Mater Dei. The game was set into 5 quarters, 12 minutes each. The first two were played by varsity, the third and fourth were played by jv, and during the fifth quarter, varsity played in an attempt to pull a win, which never came. Sophomore Tabby Clem stated that the scrimmage highlighted things for the team as to how well they did and what exactly they need to work on.
She said, “Despite it being our first game in all, we played well. We ran plays smoothly and all worked well together. We definitely will be working on zone defense and rebounding, because during the game we really lacked those skills. The junior varsity played just as well even though they are the youngest team we’ve had for ten years. Coach pushes us to work hard every practice, and that’s what we all need in order to reach the next level and win our games.”
The beginning of the season for some teams is very enduring, but for the Lady Titans, they are quite used to it. The early season called for many after school conditioning practices and drills. During a regular practice, the ladies do drills such as dribble pass, layups, diagonals, two on two rebounding, and ladders. Dickinson said, “practices make us better in every way, and now that we had our scrimmage, and know what to work on, we can all only get
better.”
For the veteran varsity players, Clem, Sylar Boes, Sophie Toth and Jessica Mahoney, this season brings as to what Chlem described a “rough and difficult challenge” due to the overall youngness of the team due to the loss of over half of the varsity. However, the youngness of the team in no way reflects their skills or experience, and the number of Freshman on varsity really goes to show just that.
