Personal Narrative: My First Therapy Session
Becca presented herself in a professional manner and maintained her professionalism throughout the entire session. Her dress reflected that of a competent and professional therapist. Becca was very clear in explaining the goals and expectations of the session. As the client whose first therapy session was this one, I would feel comfortable knowing what to expect throughout the 50 minutes.
Becca’s tone of voice matched me as a client. Her voice was calm and soothing. When the conversation transitioned to more serious matters, her tone got softer and changed when asking questions. She was very clear. She did use “umm”, but it was not distracting from her line of questioning.
Her questions were well prepared and the sequencing made sense. There

Even when I mentioned the eating and not sleeping and constantly being ill, a lot of time was spent focused on the relationship with my boyfriend. I used his control problems to perpetuate the binging and purging, but I used him being busy as an excuse for his controlling behavior and for me not having to address the control issues and my own issues.
I tried to be clear that I did not want him in the process of therapy. As someone presenting symptomology of bulimia nervosa, I do not know if I would have suggested starting a gym routine with him, especially because of his control issues. If we could steer clear of the boyfriend, I think a lot of progress can be made with Becca with the bulimia.
There were some questions and statements Becca made that I really appreciated as a client. She asked what I thought my strengths were and if there was anything I valued about myself. I liked that this made me consider positive attributes that I may have, even if I might have not fully seen them at the time, but it gave it potential. She also was very encouraging when she reflected on my accomplishments with school and recognized my intelligence. When she recognized the difficulty of coming into therapy and discussing these issues, it made me feel comfortable as a client. She also asked and tried to clarify what I wanted out of therapy to make sure she was getting a full picture of what I wanted and why I was

The thing I found most interesting was the clinician’s ability to keep the client on task and always bring him back when he lost focus. The other was how many different activities the clinician had planned for the fifty-minute session. She kept the client very busy as to not lose his focus, yet still managing to keep everything tied into the goals she had laid…

The clinician begins the clinical session by welcoming Terri and thanking him for coming to the session. Throughout the clinical session the clinician positioned herself so that she was facing the client but still kept her body at a slight angle so that she was not directly across from him. I noticed that their bodies were in close proximity and that their knees were almost touching. The helper made sure to keep eye contact throughout the session and kept her hands crossed in her lap. The body positioning that she used allowed her to be open and comfortable with the client.…

This assessment was conducted in the respectful and professional standard with all the characteristics of the helping person I have learned such as, positive regard, which is the ability to appreciate, and respect another person’s worth and dignity with a nonjudgement attitude; empathy, which is the capacity to respond to another’s feeling and experience as if they were your own; genuineness, which is the ability to represent oneself honestly and spontaneously; concreteness, which means speaking to the client in specific terms rather than in vague generalities.…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

Everyone has their own morals which molds them into who they are. This also often determines the choices they make. From the book The Great Gatsby, Nick has a decision to make based upon his standards and values of living. His decision in this case is determining what his next step would be after knowing the broken relationship between Tom and Daisy. Both Tom and Daisy are identified to value money and love more than anything else. Money plays a big role in their lives, because it shapes their reputation in the community and also fills up their own satisfactions. Their value of love is also evidently shown when they displayed signs of disloyalty in their marriage relationship. While Tom had “secret” affairs with Myrtle and the maid in Santa Barbara, Daisy, who yearned for a romantic love life, processed a relationship with Gatsby. In the midst of this, Nick as a bystander of their relationship has slightly different morals than them. He indeed values love, however he…

Throughout the session, I believe I showed good professionalism in my attire, my approaches, paraphrasing/summarizing, and questions. One situation in the video where I displayed an unprofessional action was when I was fighting back the tears when Christina was reporting how her mother does not have a strong support group, will be homeless when Christina’s father stops paying her rent, and how her mother looks sad all the time (26.39m). While watching the counseling session, you cannot see me tearing up, however, after the session Christina stated how she could tell I was tearing up. By tearing up during the session, I am distracting the client and putting the focus on me.…

Reflecting on a session Brendan explained how frighten he is to move out and start this new life without every member of his imitate family. When he described his feeling of helplessness I quickly judge him based on his age, size and persona. I will admit my assumption almost interfered with my therapeutic relationship with him. I think I focused too much on his outer appearance and strength- based skills that I neglected my countertransference as being a petite woman of color. According to the technical task for therapist is to decide when the client needs the therapist to be where he/she is, and when the client is ready to open up and allow the therapist to direct the conversation or attention in another…

In the first practicum session, I have the chance to role play the client. I tried to fill my emotions as if I am the client who needs to be counseled. The moment I step into the building, I felt a moment of coldness and anxiousness, probably I don’t know what to expect. After I have seated, with the counselor facing me, a total stranger looking at me wanting to talk to me to find out my inner feelings. I was not prepared to share my…
