Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

The hero’s journey is perhaps one of the most archaic, most easily understood, and yet, most complex tales in all of human existence. It has been recounted in indeterminate ways such as when the hero saves the princess in the classic saga, Star Wars, to the hero learning nothing more than a simple moral lesson that is meant to be directed towards the reader like in the Wizard of Oz. It is also infused into literature with the hero defeating crippling ailments and managing to restore the courage she once had like in Peeling the Onion by Wendy Orr. The original status quo was that the hero’s journey was an extremely loose and versatile literary plot. However, as more stories came out with increasingly resemblant storylines regarding heroes and their journeys, this would no longer be the case.…

I think I am starting to get tired of the everyday routine that we have to endure so we can spend the rest of the day travelling, only to rise the next day to repeat the process again. We wake up earlier than the sun does to eat a meal consisting of bacon, bacon, and more bacon. It wasn’t all that bad at first, but now, I can’t even look at it anymore. At this point in the journey, I am starting to be introduced to another side of nature, one that I didn’t get to experience back in Pittsburgh. We are travelling down a part of the prairie that provides a home to many unique specimens that are new to our city eyes.…

U.S. Was one of the greatest experience. You see my Background has a history, which I myself was clueless about. At the age of three my mother was searching for freedom for a better life. My father was arrested and my mother left two month pregnant with an unborn child. The connection was lost and life continued. That unborn child was me. I can imagine what she was to do or how she felt. God definitely had hands on me Jeremiah 29:11.…
The last thing she wanted to do was run away, but that was all she knew how to do. Run, run, and continue running. How could someone like her be the salvation of a disappearing race? Such thoughts plagued her mind until she felt the familiar warmth that only emitted from Reuna, his words stinging deeply. What did he know about harsh realities? He had no idea what she was going through. Not so long ago she was living in a lavish palace where servants were at her beck and call. Edmund was always chasing after her with a lecture on the tip of his tongue for her unladylike actions after getting the order to collect the wayward princess. Edmund… just the reminder of him made it feel like the wind had knocked out of her lungs and she was suffocating.…
It was very late when they docked in Sagera and it took some time to arrange for the carriages to pick them up since no one anticipated their early return. Nightburn quietly waited at the end of the dock with the others, no one wanting to talk. The only thing they all wanted was to be on their way back to the manor. After a half hour, the carriages arrived with everyone moving forward to greet them and begin their journey home. Balthazar appeared from out of the darkness, “My Lord, please get in and let’s be on our way.”…
As I look back on the work of past social justice heroes such as, Mohandas Gandhi, Malcolm X, Dorothy Day, and Martin King Jr., and the social justice movements I have grown up to see, such as the LGBT community and the Black Lives Matter movement, I tend to ponder how those individuals and movements were able to make such an impact on society. What were their methods and what tools did they use to get such attention nationally and internationally? I ask these questions because I aspire to help individuals who are facing social injustice by those around them and/or by a higher authority as well. Yet, how can I accomplish this? It’s a matter of looking at what can make me out to be a “hero” of social justice, how I can be a “hero” now as a student at the University of Mount Union, and how I can carry out the knowledge that I’ve been passed down through the university. With these elements pulled together, one can find the answer of what it means to be their own “hero”.…
Was I ever going to be good enough in my own mind when everyone already sees me as the hero of the town?…
