Personal Narrative: My High School Dance Team
Growing up in Houston, Texas, I have been fortunate to be exposed to a very diverse community. Encountering individuals with beliefs different than our own can be strange and unfamiliar, I am grateful I have had those situations because they helped me prepare for an experience I had with my high school dance team. Luckily, I come from a very culturally diverse family. My mother’s father is from the Middle East while my father’s family is European. Vastly different origins within one family can create obstacles to achieve one decision. Watching my family work through their ideas and beliefs has helped prepare for one of my more difficult high school experiences. To date, the most significant experience in being a part of a melting pot of …show more content…
Every team member recognized that we were being tested. Furthermore, we understood this was a challenge to see if we had the strength to overcome our differences. Not only were we proving to our director what we could accomplish, but to ourselves as well. There is nothing like the experience of seeing ourselves through to the end of the journey to give us a feeling of pride and sisterhood. As we continued to work as a team, I began to develop very deep friendships with all of my dance mates. This made working with all them easier. The next practices went smoothly as we all became accustomed to each other’s differences and strengths. We used those strengths to grow closer and help each other; rather than letting them come between us. Before my dance team years, I felt that I was an open-minded individual. But as reflect back, I feel that working so closely with girls so different from has helped to broaden my acceptance of the people who I encounter in my life. I have learned that other’s ideas, beliefs or strengths may help me, change my point of view or even solidify what I believe. Learning to be accepting, open and tolerant is a milestone in becoming an adult. I am very grateful for the experiences I have had in my journey that have helped me reach that

“At Damien Memorial School, what makes us different, unites us.” Over the years that I’ve been here at Damien I’ve come to realize that the quote above is rather true in ways that other schools haven’t quite experienced. Despite the fact that we’re a pretty small school compared to Punahou, Kamehameha, Iolani, or Sacred Hearts, we’re all different whether it’s our personality or our ethnic backgrounds. These two things help to unite all of us as a community to understand people whose ancestors are from different parts of the world and how it has shaped someone and their life. If it weren’t for the diversity amongst the students and teachers at Damien, it would be boring because everyone would be the same. Nevertheless, diversity allows us to…

Back in summer of 2014 all of our friends were so excited for the new year. We were going to be in 8th grade, at the top of the food chain at our Junior High. Not only were we excited about all the different things we were going to be able to do as 8th grader, like take chinese or year round spanish if you're into that. But what we were focusing on the eye of the prize, the 8th grade dance. The best part about this dance was that it wasn’t any ordinary dance, everyone had to be dressed up in nice clothes or otherwise they would be asked to leave. This…

I walked with my chin held high, I began straying away from the group of associates that did not benefit me emotionally or academically. I saw a change within the first week and so did everyone around me. But of course, a short retreat can only have a short-term result. Miss Nadia strongly believed that a 3 day retreat isn’t enough to provoke young girls to become advocates for their community, so she made sure that we had to attend mandatory events throughout the year in order to keep an active status in the program. It was only a matter of time before I was back to my old ways. We were required to volunteer at program events during the year to help other girls. It was nostalgic seeing these girls in my shoes, I was eager to see them progress, as I…

I come from a very traditional nuclear Mexican family. The oldest of 5 siblings and the first in my family to come to college. From the Southside of Chicago where you constantly hear airplanes pass your home. I came to SIU to study what I…

Perhaps the most pivotal point of my education has been the diversity I am surrounded with. Attending one of the best high schools in the state has exposed me to vast diversity which challenged my beliefs and led me to mature faster than friends at other schools. For example, in one of my classes, the person on my left is Indian, the person behind me is Jamaican, and the person to my right is Bosnian. Cultural diversity is just the beginning. I am surrounded by some of the most talented people I have ever met who can make provoking art, choreograph beautiful dances, create city-wide magazines, win the Siemen’s competition, and much more. Diversity within education is essential to the growth of students. Being surrounded by people who think, act, and talk like you doesn’t teach students perspective. That is why I am grateful for opportunities like the Porter scholarship which gives talented students an opportunity to get scholarships and contribute to the diversity of the University of…

My partner of eleven years is my greatest cheerleader. When I feel overwhelmed and depressed she gives me encouragement to conquer every challenge I’m faced with. In addition to my partner, another influential person in my life is a co-worker and friend. She fills the maternal role that is absent in my life, by giving me advice, different perspectives, and confidence. My career plays a vital role in my resilience, it gives me cause to wake up and achieve greatness each day. The children I work with inspire me to be a better educator, nurturer, and caregiver. When I am feeling depressed nothing lifts my spirits speedier, than my students. I believe it is a gift to have the availability to focus on constructing children’s strengths, rather than…

I was born in Miami, Florida, which is in South Florida. I am a 22-year-old, straight, half Christian half jewish male who was born into a high social class. Growing up my mother instilled a sense of religion in me as my family attended church on a regular basis. I am the younger of two children and I am an athletic, on the shorter side, black haired, green eyed, Cuban American. My older brother Jesse Kapel is 29 years old, male, married and with a one year old baby. I have always looked up to my brother as a role model. I speak English and Spanish fluently. I had a wealth of educational resources available to me since I went to a private school from kindergarten to fifth grade. My middle school was much more diverse than my private elementary school. I attended the local public high school, which was mostly white. However there were many racial issues between blacks, hispanics, and whites. Many of which ended up in fights. All three schools however were high rated schools in which I felt I got the most out of my education. I did not have choices on my schooling until I reached high school in which I chose to attend the districts public school assigned to my zone.…

My hispanic culture makes up an immense amount of my being, however the bits and pieces I have been able to gather from my school and my wonderful community also play a major role in my persona. As a student, my peers and friends, my teachers, my teammates, and the others who have crossed my path have given me something invaluable. It is all of these people that have taught me an unending acceptance that transcends any nationality, sexuality or other social label. People in their entirety, outside of the things that make them different, all have something incredible to…
