Personal Narrative: My Last Pair
I was on a long road trip this summer. I was having a wonderful time listening to the amazing Will Hobbs’s "Downriver." It documents some juvenile delinquents going on a white water rafting trip down the most dangerous Colorado River. It was filled with stories of bravery and overcoming fears of extreme sports. I need a break for awhile from the voice speaking at me, I need the radio. I turned it on, and there it was: Yosemite Valley, Dean Potter, 43-year-old white man, fell to his death, trying wingsuit fly. This extremity, this danger has been going on for centuries. It could have been family. It could have been a friend. It could have been a classmate.
This death, these sports, is the main part of peoples lives. What are we going to do about it? You know that part of us that wants to jump right off the cliff with these people? That part.
So I have a call to action for you.

It’s not the hardest thing to do, but it’s also one of those things that takes courage to ditch your old and trusted gear. You know, I was in Yosemite, going for another jump, when we needed some new gear, his zipper broke on his chute pack. We see all these sports stores with the equipment. I see the new on the market brand that is tested to best quality and the same price as the old not as good brand and I move to it. My friend hesitates and follows with resistance. One need, one purpose, and one responsibility, but different viewpoints. The newer brand got us that jump and many more for my friend.
You know, biases are the stories we make up about gear before we know what they actually are. But how are we going to know what they are when we’ve seen good things and heard bad things and the only thing that we can think about is the bad things? So I’m going to tell you to walk toward your discomfort toward that new equipment, it could save your

My two core values are Family and Faith. My top priorities in life are God and my family. It wasn't hard for me to choose my top two core values because I know that with God and my family I am able to achieve the other things. My family were the first people to provide me with love, happiness, friendship, and wisdom. They have been here for me every step of the way and as I am getting older, everything I strive to be and to do is ultimately to help them and make them proud. Faith is very important to me and that is something that my family has taught and instilled in me. Everything I do is for the approval of God. I have learned that hat God has for me is for me. Therefore, I am able to achieve success, peace, status, and wealth if that is…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

One thing that sets me apart from the other candidates applying to the University of California is my hard work. I have always been smaller than other kids my age. At 15 years old I was 4’ 10’’ and looked like I was eleven years old. Although this was an advantage at the airport, when I would begin to take off my shoes and the TSA Officer would look at me and say, “Don’t worry twelve and under can keep their shoes on.” I was often discredited for my size. Especially because I played volleyball, a sport known for its height. I constantly struggled to make a team I deserved to be on because people would see my height and automatically think I was not capable. Although my height often led me to feel discouraged and angry it eventually taught hard work.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…

Now all I am missing was my own set of cleats. I bothered my mother on numerous occasions to get me some new cleats. We were planning to stop by at Sport Authority to get the shoes, but it was later found out that it was going out of business. The only other major sport store was Dick’s Sporting Good. Finally, yesterday we were able to go to Dick’s. There was a big tent outside in the parking lot where a large sign labeled “Clearance Sale” was hanged. Mother and I went inside of the tent and looked around. I saw a bright neon green pair of cleats and I quickly put them on. It fitted snugly and I was pleased how they look. I could not wait to go home and give a few kicks to the soccer ball. We also went inside the store to get me a new pair of running shoes. Mother found a red pair, and that also fitted accordingly to my feet. Mother was even planning to buy another pair to replace my sneakers. She said what I have right now was too heavy and she found a suitable candidate. There was a large weight difference, but it was a bit too big on me. It was unfortunate, but there were two other Dick’s Sport stores and the option of ordering the right sizes…
