Personal Narrative: My Passion In Football
One of my greatest passions has always been soccer. Unfortunately, my lifelong sport had come to a standstill at age 17. During the final and most competitive game of the season, I jumped to receive the soccer ball, only to have my opponent maliciously tackle me to the ground. Upon landing, I felt a series of pops in my knee and I just knew that something was wrong. I tried to tough out the pain, but by next day I was in the hospital getting an MRI, which showed a sprained MCL.
The timing of this injury was not optimal, considering I was approaching my final season of soccer. My knee was not going to be healthy enough for much play, but I knew I couldn’t quit on my passion just yet. After some time on rest and wearing a brace, I gradually

The basketball game has been going on for about an hour. Both teams have been trading points, running back and forth on the court fighting to stay ahead. The main point guard on one of the teams sprints down the court while dribbling the ball. She makes it all the way down to the end of the court, goes up for a lay-up and comes down hard on her knee. As she lands on her knee she hears a loud pop and then falls to the ground. Whether the player realizes it or not she has just tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This tear has become a more common injury throughout the years and throughout many sports as well.…

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

Over a year passed and I was back to playing volleyball. No mental or physical struggle. I played almost like nothing happened. I was playing club volleyball for Decatur Force down in Cincinnati. We were playing some tough teams and we were a little on the short side. On day two of the tournament, we were playing our first game in the morning. We were struggling. As the ball was served to us, we got the pass up and the ball was set to me. Suddenly, I felt something all too familiar. I had torn my ACL for the second…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

Through all the broken bones I had over the years from jumping and diving I never once complained, I always aimed to finish. ‘’No one was going to wear my gloves!’’ I thought. My injury’s started with a broken arm. It happened at a practice but I brushed it off and was thrilled to play at Soccer Park the next day. When the ball hit my hand I would feel like screaming but I had no substitute and didn’t want to let my teammates down. I wrapped my arm and hoped for the best. The most recent, dramatic injury of my life was a shattered sesamoid. I was playing in the 1st day of a tournament when a girl stomped powerfully on the bottom of my foot. I continued to play although I knew something was wrong. The pain grew every second, I looked down to see the bottom of my cleat was shattered. I could barely move my toes but I didn’t give up. I played the 2nd day and the following week. Two weeks later my…

Although I have had many injuries growing up, there is one that particularly changed my life for the better. The injury occurred when I was playing eighth grade football. It was August and we were scrimmaging Westfield; a very good team that had a lot of big players. The coach called me onto the field to play fullback, which means that I was probably going to carry the football. As I was running onto the field my heart started to beat a little faster. I had a bad feeling about getting the ball. I thought that I was going to get hurt because on the play prior the fullback ahead of me injured his knee on a run. Everything went well for the first few plays, but on the fifth play the coach called a fullback run. My heart was racing, at the snap of the ball I ran ahead for about an eight yard gain, but on the way down I felt a horrible pain in my right foot. I ended up going to the hospital a half an hour later, the doctor said that I had multiple fractures (6 to be exact), possibly some torn ligaments, and a dislocation of a few bones. I really did a number on myself. The doctor claimed to me that I would be out for at least 6 weeks, which is over halfway through the regular season. The doctor also highly recommended that I go see a sports injury specialist, or a foot specialist.…

My first goal was to complete a 200 pound bench press. I selected this goal because I wanted more power in football. My second goal was to do 75 consecutive push ups. I chose this goal because push ups are a great exercise to increase your bench press. My third goal was to get really cut and lower my body fat percentage. I increase cardio and changed to a healthier diet to achieve this goal. My fourth goal was to weight 150lbs. I chose this goal because having some extra weight will help me on the football field. I tried to make these goals reasonable and with a lot of hard work I was able to achieve 2 of them.…

Soccer was going well until the day before my first scrimmage. I had a dentist appointment before I went to soccer and I was running a tad late. When I got there they were already working on defending drills and everything we normally did after stretches. Instead of doing my stretches I just jumped right in to what everyone else was doing. When it was my turn to defend I put pressure on the ball and when I went to plant my foot to change direction I heard six pops and an instant pain run up my leg. I fell to the ground and landed completely on it and all I could remember was how unbearable the pain was. I eventually became stable with my…

Unfortunately, halfway through the season I was unable to play: the pain and discomfort were occurring too often and were disrupting my every activity. My coach was cold and focused on winning and when he noticed me faltering on the field, he pulled me out for the rest of the season. For the next 6 weeks, I spent nearly every day standing by the bench in the cold October weather, forced to support my teammates this way.…

My sophomore year while playing in a football game, I tackled a player from the other team right before half-time. While I was making the tackle, I felt a pop in my knee. It wasn’t very painful because of the adrenaline in my system at the time but the next day the pain came. It felt like there was a rubber band getting caught on my knee and coming off almost every step I took. I just put this pain aside through part of basketball season until the pain was too much and I went to get a check up, then a MRI, then before i knew it I had to get surgery for a torn meniscus. This ended my basketball season. After surgery I went to my rehab physical therapist Dr. Marty in Centralia. He got my knee back in good working order after…

When I got home I iced my knee every time before going to go play and every night before I went to bed. I also stretch every day so it could hurt less but I kept going to practice. I would just walk, also jock and stretch the whole practice. Then the pain would go away little by little. One day, before the final game I was able to sprint and run but the problem it would hurt me if I would stop right away. So in the final the other team players were really fast and would make a lot of stops so my knee would hurt but I would just push myself. That was a day that everyone in was telling me to keep trying. I could do it and just push myself, thanks to my team mates support I played fantastic because I knew they were there for me. I also knew that if I or someone else in my team messed up that we wouldn't tell bad things. We would support the player by saying “its okay you will get it next time just try your best. We won the championship game and game back with the First place trophy for the second year in a…

I was at practice one Wednesday night of January the 11th, in the middle of a defensive drill In which I planted my foot and put all my weight on it ready to turn the ball handler. Then made a quick few steps then dropped to the hardwood I was in a world of hurt. I quickly grabbed at my leg grimacing with pain as my head laid back. I tried to hold back tears, after receiving help to sit down I could feel the cooling of ice on my leg, however, I wasn't able to pinpoint the exact part the pain was coming from. My dad had to come and pick me up and I could not put any weight whatsoever on my leg for literally three days. My mom took me to get an x-ray the next day, the doctor said: “Well the x-rays don't show anything let’s wait a while and if you still have any complications then we’ll schedule an MRI.” About a week and a half went by until I finally got the MRI it took about an hour and the machine kept giving off these strange loud noises it was weird. Then we had to wait for a few days to get the results, It was that Saturday at six o'clock that me and my brother and sister were at my grandma’s then my mom called asking to speak to me I picked up the phone not expecting what I was about to hear, “Cameron, the results came back and you have a completely torn ACL, you need to come home and get back on the crutches.” It felt like I just got shot, I was not expecting a torn…
