It seems that obesity will always be a problem with no solution. For once it would be merely impossible to find a solution that everyone likes or even one that the majority will support. There are different points of view in which someone could try to figure something out to at least help with the matter of obesity. ABC News is trying to tackle the problem and inform people on obesity by having a summit with Time magazine and discuss on various ways that would lower obesity in this country. Radley Balko mainly discusses the government point of view in his essay “What You Eat Is Your Business.” I agree with Balko’s essay since government needs to visualize the situation from different directions.…
We all know that fast food in general is bad for our well being. I mean, foods proccessed with tons of cooking oil can't be healthy. However we still always have that as Plan B when it comes to our lack of nutrition. Some say its inexpensive, while others say it's just a place where over-cooked and over-priced food meet. In this book Eric Schlosser explains the gruesome ways behind the scenes of the fast food industry. Some just all too hard to take in, especially considering I'm really craving a burger right now.…
So it was like every other day, I wake up wash my face, take a shower, get dressed, and eat. After 2 hours of doing this I start walking to school.…
In the reading “What You Eat Is Your Business” Radley Balko states “For decades now, America’s Healthcare system has been migrating toward socialism. Your well-being, shape, and condition have increasingly been deemed matters of “public health,” instead of matters of personal responsibility.” (467) which shows this writer’s view that it is a problem of discipline and a person’s own personal choice to be unhealthy. “That means freeing insurance companies to reward healthy lifestyles, and penalize poor ones. It means halting plans to further socialize medicine and health care. Congress should also increase access to medical and health savings accounts, which give consumers the option of rolling money reserved for health care into a retirement account.” (468-469) This would also indicate he wants the government to reward the good choices and healthy lifestyles of those who kept to a reasonable diet, further supporting his argument of personal responsibility in the matter.…
I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…
As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…
To tell my story, I have to set the scene. It was the summer of 2014, the Thursday before school started actually. I had not seen familiar faces in a while so, I was ready to get back. I did not realize it yet, but taking a job at Whataburger would be the biggest (only) mistake I ever made.…
Last year I was prit near 375 lbs and I knew something had to give. I have tried, low fat, low cal, counting macros and everything. I always still would gain! I would eat veggies and lean meat keeping under 1200 calories sometimes 800 when frustrated, I'd still wake up weighing more. Well to be honest, I believe the food pyramid is very, very inaccurate. I sometimes watch shows like my 600 lb life, for motivation for myself, because I need it still! I was to a point in my life I couldn't walk or stand more than 5 minutes! I'd have to sit on a chair to do dishes, I felt useless anymore honestly. One day something clicked and I seen a friend who posted about her 210 lb weight loss and started to read. I was blown away! I started it and I won't lie, I went out with a bang! Made a huge chocolate cake 13x9 and we ate half of it. I canned the rest. Within the first 3 days I was 5 lbs down! I couldn't believe it, without any exercise! People say oh you can't do that, but you can! You simply have to eat the RIGHT foods! 60% carbs isn't for us! That's what was set up by a group of people who think they know everything! They don't! But anyways if you want to learn how to eat the correct macros and learn to lose weight without worry, then this is for you! Ooh you have to give up some things! But tell yourself YOU'RE WORTH IT! I know what it feels like to hurt everyday and not be able to function and go out to the store cause you just cannot walk.…
My ears ring as the old school bus screeches to a halt. We hop off and a dry, winter gust smacks my face. Instantly, my stuffy nose runs. I grasp the cold metal handle of the school door, open it, and slam a piece of wood underneath to keep it ajar. After we become accustomed to the cold shock, Mrs. Cimenski, our director, orders us to haul the heavy wooden tables and a set of four lockers toward our designated area backstage. We struggle through multiple doors and long curtains until we reach our destination. The first aid kit mends our minor cuts and bruises created in the process. Gathering our senses, we collect the makeup and costumes and begin a brisk walk to the classroom assigned to us. The first performance is in an hour and a half,…
The first perspective is of a carnivore’s. The taste of meat is one of many things in life that you can’t just recreate and expect it to have the same taste as the original. It has a unique taste and texture that only the mastication of flesh in between your teeth can satisfy. The tenderness, juiciness, and taste is what leaves people wanting more. Speaking from my past love for meat those were all the reasons I was head over heels in love with it. Although after I learned what these poor creatures have to endure for me enjoy such a delicacy I became a vegetarian. Some meat eaters know about what goes on in factory farms and how their food is processed but they continue to enjoy their consumption of meat. Although it is a good source of protein…
One of the worse thing I have been through was my own foolish choice. I moved to Detroit to do food activism and make a permaculture homestead. I did not have wealthy family members to ask for help or a degree that would have gotten me a job. The soil was damaged enough that some areas you could only eat from raised gardens. It was not as advertised. It was like trying to do peace corps with no support system or even police. I ended up suicidal and starting myself because the food stamps office just laughed at me and told me to go back to Iowa.…
Before I was saved, I lived a very unhealthy lifestyle. Being the youngest in my family, I was constantly spoiled and protected. This led me to become a very prideful and ignorant child. I thought the world was great, my life was great, and I was great. Now I am not saying any of those things are not true, but my views changed quite a bit once I hit middle school. My sister had moved onto college at this point and I was alone to tackle middle school. I discovered a lot during those years but my biggest discovery was probably about my family. I learned that they weren’t the perfect figures I thought they were. My parents fought constantly and that left me devastated. On top of being spoiled and arrogant, I was also depressed.…

I started working in the restaurant industry while in high school back in 2011. From bussing tables, to cooking, to serving I have continued to work my way up and have always strived for better opportunities. Over the course of five years working in the field I have learned the does and don’ts of the profession and how to handle myself appropriately in spontaneous situations. While working in the food industry I have developed strong social skills which allow me to handle customers in a professional manner. Being able to clearly communicate with others is an iatrical part of any profession. Being in the food industry is not my ideal profession however; it has been a good stepping stone and has taught me good work ethics throughout the…
