Personal Narrative: Pet Shelters
There have been situations where I felt that I have been treated unfairly. I would like to share one that occurred in the spring of 8th grade. As an animal lover, I wanted to find an opportunity that would give me a chance to surround myself in an environment with many types of lovely animals. I went to find an opportunity at a pet shelter that needed volunteers. I walked inside the shelter and asked the front person if there was a volunteer opportunity available. I was told that there was no opportunity available, but I did not think anything about it. I went home, then after a few hours went by, I texted my friend, who is Caucasian, if I could come over to her house. I received a text back saying that she was busy volunteering at the same pet shelter that I had gone to just a few hours ago. …show more content…

I was very suspicious of the situation so I decided to go back to the pet shelter and ask for an opportunity once again. I went back to the pet shelter and as I walked inside the shelter, the same front person recognized me and gave me a slight glare but I ignored it. I once again asked the same front person for an opportunity. Before she could respond to my question, I told her that a friend of mine who is volunteering here at that moment, let me know that help was needed to care for the animals. Knowing that information, she decided to give me an opportunity to volunteer with the animals. As the day went on, I became acquainted with the staff and also the discriminatory cashier. The next day, we all decided to get together and know each other better. We all went to the mall a day after and got to know each other

Everyone at some point has been judged unfairly. In my case, being judged unfairly can happen because of a lack of trust or lack of understanding. A good example of this was during freshman year in geometry. After spending many hours at a friend’s house working on an extensive homework assignment, we learned the material and completed the assignment by working together. After we turned the homework in, the teacher immediately wrote us off claiming that we were cheaters. She sent emails to our parents to inform them that we were violators of the honor code. After reading the email, my mom flipped and proceeded to ground me and insult my “poor work ethic.” I was furious because I had done nothing…

Everyone in the world will experience discrimination at least once in their life. It is something that has become so accepted in the world today, not many people notice it even happening anymore. The famous quote by Roger Staubach, “Discrimination is a disease,” is one of the truest things I have heard. The families that discriminate the most often pass it on to their children, until everyone around them feels that way too. It just feeds off of itself until everyone tends to think that way. The three most examples that stick out to me is the holocaust, the book To Kill a Mockingbird, and of Mice and Men.…

However, I have come to the understanding that being part of a subordinate culture specifically an African one, I have had to deal with a great deal of prejudice and discrimination based on my skin color. Most of my knowledge of my race has come through the focus of black history during the month of February. I remember watching a movie called To Kill a Mockingbird in high school, this movie sheds some light on the position and struggles blacks have had and still face in society, with respects to discrimination. Growing up, my parents were not very vocal about the topic of race in general, noting that, I was always told by my parents and in church, not to use hateful speech, and to treat everyone equally, as we all belong to one human…

As I entered homeroom, I noticed I was the only latina present and that there was only one other person of color. At first this did not bug me, but as the week went by, I realized that we were the only two non-white students in the whole middle school. This made me feel very out of place, because I had never been the only Latina at a school, so I did anything I could to fit in. I was willing to let people make me their own personal dictionary, for inappropriate language, or to translate their readings. As a person of color, I was always taught to put others before me or else I would be seen as rude and uneducated, so I complied. Throughout my life, I have witnessed that many upper class citizens take their privilege for granted; they do not…

On a cold, brisk snowy night in New York City little did I know I was about to make an encounter with someone I'd never forget. I was waiting for a friend in McDonald's so she could get her food and stay inside for warmth, when I realized someone not too far behind me was talking. Startled, I turned around I saw a homeless man wrapped in torn up blankets, shaggy, undone brown hair and trying to keep warm like the rest of us. My first instinct was to stay clear until a woman had drooped her purse and money rolled around his feet, as he bent down to retrieve the money to all our disbelief he handed her the money and told her something extraordinary. As he handed the woman back her money with shaky hands, he looked down and exclaimed how,"Money…

Mrs. Davis said, “Absolutely, this morning I was getting ready for my meeting when I heard what happened to Katherine and saw you guys over. I tried to get someone else to take the meeting and couldn’t find anyone willing to do it. When I came home, I called the police department to tell them about the man in the backyard. They told me to wait until you came back and tell you about the homeless man. He is probably the murderer.” Pointing her finger toward the detective, Mrs. Davis added.”Kathy was my friend.”…

In the beginning of this class I learned about discrimination, which is when people treat others different because of their skin color. In the book “The Secret Life of Bees,” the main character, who is white, has a babysitter who is black which one day goes out to the town to sign a paper that would help black on something. On the way there a white guy comes and starts making fun of her because she was black, so then she spit at the guy’s shoe…

Racial and ethnic discrimination is something that makes me mad. Racial & ethics discrimination occurs daily and obstructs the progress of millions of people worldwide. Racism and intolerance destroy lives and communities. This big issue deprives people of the fundamental principles of equality and non-discrimination. The fight against discrimination is a priority problem. It is necessary to identify this problem that has generated an unequal treatment of a person or group of persons. A couple years ago I went to the movies with a group of friends and we saw a very tense situation between a security man and another woman. The woman was a person from the amazon (Peru). The security man didn’t allow her to enter to the movies. We were so upset…

The moment I looked out the window of the car and my eyes turned to the row of homeless people weaving its way through the traffic begging for money, I jumped out of my seat. It was my first visit to India after leaving the country for the United States. The homeless people's’ hands were making weird gestures and thumping the windows of the honking cars. I could not digest what I was seeing! While reaching out to an old woman to give her some money, I thought about what non homeless people could do to help those without a home and basic needs. Then, I asked myself a question. Why not give them something that will be with them forever and help them out of their poverty and teach them valuable skills? After all, a mountain of…

These are my experiences while visiting both animal shelters; first I visited Orange County Animal Services. When I came in I realize there were people standing on line waiting to talk to the clerk to tell her their business in the shelter. I told her I was there from school and it seem like she has got a lot of those visits because before I could finish she told me the best way to get around the shelter, so I wouldn’t miss anything. When I was a child with a constant racing mind, one could imagine the thoughts that would have gone through my head throughout an average day, things like ‘why is the sky blue’, ‘how many hairs are there on a dog’, or ‘when’s the next new episode of Lizzie McGuire going to be on?’ You may not be surprised by an eight year old asking to her step father what he’d do with one million donuts. I answered my own question before he could even think and surprised him. He had been expecting me to want to eat them all, and I instead told him I’d love to feed all of the homeless in the world. Later that night he told my mom of what I said during that conversation, though she wasn’t surprised as I had grown up as a very aware child in Ottawa, a city with over six thousand homeless citizens. She believed that my exposure to cultures in school and my natural empathetic abilities helped me become the person I am now.…

Ever since I can remember, my one driving force has been for animals. I was the girl who was obsessed with helping a hurt or lost animal, and always curious about the creatures I found in my backyard. I have a devoted passion for animals of all shapes and sizes and plan to spend my future saving them and their habitats. I want to help the people of our world understand that animals are not ours to use and abuse for material use, food, and entertainment. First with saving animas comes saving their habitats. For the way we are advancing in the technological and industrial world is not sustainable; due to human activities, we face a world with no fisheries, coral reefs, or rainforests; declining oxygen concentrations, the loss of honey bees,…
