Personal Narrative: Phyllis Dupuy's Life
At times when I grow bored about living in Louisiana, the state’s remarkable culture, food, and geography soothes my adventurous desires to relocate. While a lack of activities to engage in is frequent when living in “the bowl,” going on a boat ride on a beautiful day eliminates my state of idleness. One might infer that water is just water if he sees it all the time because it is always there. When I visualize water, I think of my late grandmother who loved Louisiana’s bodies of water. My deceased grandmother, Phyllis Dupuy, lived in Louisiana all of her life. She loved to cook, eat, and drink as the traditional “New Orleanian” does today. In addition to her three passions, she also found love in smoking cigarettes. My grandma smoked until she developed terminal cancers that led to her demise 3 years ago. After her series of chemotherapy treatments failed at M.D. Anderson in Texas, she decided to return to Louisiana- her home. My maw maw passed away approximately two weeks after her arrival home. A memorial service was held because she had decided to be cremated. In addition to her cremation, her dying wish was to have her ashes released over Delacroix Lake- a lake where her father took her fishing as a child. Her desire was fulfilled. As the wind carried my maw maw’s remains away, it took fragments …show more content…
Upon boarding the boat, I viewed water as if it were not just water. I found solace in the water, for it is where my grandmother resides. The atmosphere and its cool breeze reassured my soul that all was well. The song, “You Are My Sunshine,” implies, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away.” My maw maw used to sing that song to me at bedtime and at times when I was consumed in melancholy. While I lament that I cannot be her sunshine anymore, Nature has allowed her to be

The poem “Urban Indian: Portrait 3” written by Richard Wagamese, shows how an experience in nature can help create a connection not only with nature but also with humans. The speaker remembers an old experience of his when he was paddling “..and he can still feel the muscle/ of the channel on his arm/ the smell of it/ potent, rich, eternal/ the smell of dreams and visions..” This feeling and connection has been kept within him and has helped him become who he is now as an adult: “..and heads down the stairs/ out into the street/ to find the kids/ he teaches to carve paddles now.” He may be far from that place where he once was, but he shares this memory to carve the paddles of a canoe: “..in the moonlight/ what he brings to them.” This reveals…

My maternal grandmother Shirley Rae Harrington grew up during World War Two. But despite the war, she lived a somewhat normal childhood. When she was young there were very few other children in the area to play with and her younger sister, Sissy, was paralyzed. So she often played by herself in a stream nearby. Her family also owned several horses, chickens, pigs and a billy goat. Surprisingly she didn't get into much trouble as a child, except once when her family was down in our properties Maryland. People were racing speedboats in the creek, so she asked a neighbor who her family knew if she could go. He said yes and took her in his own boat when they got back her parents were fine but Mimi was upset with her. Her first travel experience…

All my life I have lived Pearl, MS. I never went out of state for vacation, even though I have always wanted to travel and explore the world. I would constantly ask my parents to take me, until they finally took me on thanksgiving break. When I arrived to Santa Catharina, I did not expect to see the immense amount of difference that I perceived. The city of Pearl has different geography, cars, and opportunities from Santa…

In this essay from excerpts from “The Water and Culture Reader”, Alexis Harte talks about the history of the San Antonio River walk. It is also known as Paseo del Río which is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River. Today, the River Walk is an enormously successful special-case pedestrian street, one level down from the automobile street. The River Walk loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the major tourist draws from the Alamo to River center Mall, to the Arneson River Theatre, to Marriage Island, to La Villita, to HemisFair Park, to the Tower Life Building, to the San Antonio Museum of Art, a “Flood Of Memories”nd the Pearl Brewery. During the annual springtime Fiesta, the River Parade features flowery floats that float down the river.…

and I took a look in the back to see what we could spare, and for the first time in what seems like years, we agreed on something. My mothers chest had to go. It was a hard goodbye for my father, but he still has her portrait, so that helped. We left it on the side of the trail. It was so odd, seeing on of the last parts of my mother we have, sitting among weeds and dust.…

Passage 1 uses visual imagery to describe elaborately the positive nature at the Okefenokee Swamp. The “primitive swamp” is located in “southeastern Georgia and northern Florida” and is a “shallow saucer-shaped.” Passage 1 also dramatically uses adjectives to inform about the unique qualities you can find present at the swamp, “exotic flowers such as floating hearts, and rare orchids” located in the “open water”. Passage 1 informs persuasive material to try to attract tourists to visit but as the passage has sucked the audience in it gives almost a subliminal message about the alligators being present so the visitors will know but ignore it because of all the other positive attracts at the Swamp.…

Brian Stewart’s oil painting, “Home on the Mississippi”, is an exceptional piece of artwork from the culture it unfolds to the characteristic composition of how it was made. “Home on the Mississippi” is beautifully painted with oil onto canvas, colors exuberating realistic features and setting the mood. The painting portrays the reality of America in the late 1800’s. Picking a piece of artwork that I appreciate was easy for me. I turned my attention directly to the old American painting hanging in my Great Grandmothers hallway; “Home on the Mississippi” because of its realistic features, composition, and the most important part; the story it makes known.…

She grew miraculous gardens and magnificent flowers and raised broods of hens and ducks. She would walk miles on berry-picking expeditions and hoist her skirts to dig for clams when the tide was low. She was fourteen years younger than my father, whom she had married when she was twenty-six and had been a local beauty for a period of ten years. My mother was of the sea, as were all of her people, and her horizons were the very literal ones she scanned with her dark and fearless…

“Young sister going swimming” By M. Atwood is an extra-ordinary poem talking about the younger sister experiencing the lake that they came upon to. The lake symbolizes desolation meaning no one ever comes to it and is surrounded with the speciality of nature. The use of nature of this poem intertwines with the attitude and the atmosphere that apparent the feeling within the author and her younger sister. Nature also acts like a healing or a getaway resort for the both of them, expressing the outcome of “enjoying their free time”. Their attitude demolishes their social views and leave behind civilization. The atmosphere is a secluded, speech-free environment that tranquil their inner depth of freedom and peace, “Beside this lake, where there are no people”. The surroundings of the “trees, rocks, and the circling bays and hills” subdues the higher standards of loneliness and the intake of isolation. As the poem progresses, the author zooms into the sisters physical manner. “Against the boards, her feet make sad statements, she thinks no one can hear” says that she is thinking of something in particular. The use of syntax develops in the brackets as shown to shift the different information from the author to the younger sister. The author brings in paradox when she talks about the sister continuing “her short desolate parade to the end of the dock”. The dénouement clinches with the beginning of the sixth stanza when the author marks her page to go into the rippled water with her…

My first view of the river makes me breathless. Shallow water washes over the road’s cement pavement. Men, women, and kids break the river’s flow; some sit in fold-up chairs and read a book, but most others are leaning back in a colored tube floating the slow water. A giant cypress tree waits patiently by the road; two large nails pin a rusted metal sign to it, warning visitors of state rules and regulations. Every river crossing has the same sign posted the closet tree. The tree’s familiar sight and significance still makes me excited, because I finally feel summer vacation starting. However, the sight also makes me impatient for we don’t start tubing until the second day. I never…

Exhaustion quickly crept among us after a day filled with intense activities such as; skiing, competitive volleyball, and long boat rides on the fragile, slow moving pontoon. We then prepared ourselves for the boat ride home which would soon be a tragedy rapidly moving towards our direction.…

One of the most motivational people I have ever been blessed to have in my life would be Sandra Price, also known as Sandy. When I was in first grade, I remember walking into my Sunday-school class and noticing that there was a new volunteer. At the time I was a very chatty seven year old, who would usually be timed when talking in class because I apparently spoke “too much.” Sandy was an older woman in her early forties who had just began volunteering in the children’s ministry. The class went on, and we eventually split into small-groups to discuss the topic of fear and how to overcome it. Sandy had been asking the rather shy girls what scared them. No one had shared one of their fears, so I volunteered myself first. “While watching my ghost show last night, there was a story about one of the…

The sun warmed the young girl’s face and shoulders; grass tickled her bare feet as she wandered through the sprawling cemetery. A woman dressed in a fashionable grey suit knelt next to one of the tall graves, tears streaming down her face. The girl approached the woman cautiously; the way one would a frightened doe in the woods. The air smelled like it did when her mother left a batch of cookies in the oven for too long, like burnt sugar. The woman turned towards the girl, her face contorted with grief. “Aunt Lila!” the little girl gasped, “what’s wrong? Are you all right? What are you doing here?” she spewed out a plethora of questions. Lila turned towards her niece, her tears had subsided.…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…
