The fake grass was deeply green like usual, the sun continued to shine like it did everyday till 7 o’clock sharp, and as everyone wore their dull white shirts, I thought to myself “why did our society end up so euphoric?” Was I the only one who thought about the world before “The great crisis” or did someone else think the same way as me? It was 5080 and “the great crisis” happened about 300 years ago way before I was born, no one ever speaked of the old America, because it was considered a crime to think of such evil. But tomorrow was every girl in the 10th grades birthday, we were all turning 15, this meant that 10 out of the 43 girls would be picked as interns to the woman elders who society called the wise women. the woman I heard taught about babies and how to distribute them carefully amongst the families, another girl in the 6th grade told me that Delani, the old lady with shiny black hair and tan wrinkly skin, taught the disposal of the citizens, but there was always one woman who always intrigued me, her name was Liliana, she was one of the two people in all of the new America who wore a vibrant purple shirt with tan jeans, she had perfectly curly blonde hair and never really seemed to smile. Although no one knew what her specific teaching were, everyone was dying inside to know.
“I could not sleep at all last night I was way too excited for today” said my best friend Aria. Aria was a petite, outgoing, and a loud young lady, she often got yelled at in class, but made friends very easily, as for me I was shy, often got nervous, and was awkwardly tall, but hey I guess opposites really do attract. Aria and I ran to the grand hall and waited in line to get a number. About 15 minutes later we got our numbers I was number 40 and Aria was number 41, after this we entered inside the hall, inside the hall were ten chairs place directly on the stage, those chairs were for the girls who would be picked as interns. Before I knew it the lights were dimmed and counselor Mrs. Peck was already giving a long, boring speech. I didn’t really listen, until she started calling off numbers. First she called off number 28, next she called number 7, before I could even breathe she called number 40, astonished I ran up to the stage. After she called all the numbers she dismissed everyone else from the room besides the 10 interns and the 10 wise women. Each wise woman came up to one of us and said that we would be interning for them, I wondered who picked me. Then I heard a voice “we are leaving, come with me now” I looked up startled by the high pitched voice, I notice my mentor was Liliana. I soon rushed up from my seat and walked close behind her.
Liliana and I ended up in a little wooden shack at first I thought it was a joke, or maybe just a funny prank.
But it was surely not. “I have never seen a house like this ever, every house in the new America was two stories tall with fresh yellow paint on it.” I said in shock. “Well you have a great deal of learning to do my dear, hurry up in get in side, this is where your training will be.” I made myself comfortable in the small house, Liliana had a great collection of books throughout her little cabin. “My job is to mentor you on why the old America was so evil, so sit back and take notes, and if you have questions ask. See in the next year I am up for disposal, so you will be taking over my job. I took notice that you are curious and love to write, so I think you will make a perfect fit for this job.” In my mind I was overly joyed, but nervous at the same time I would finally get the answers to all my question I could never …show more content…
ask.
“Before you were born many Americans had the right to bear arms, which means they could have guns, a gun is something that kills someone or wounds someone instantly.” “I have a question, how are they bad if someone is trying to protect themselves from danger? Or another person from danger?” “See Emma, guns caused shootings at movie theaters, schools, as well as shootings at the public parks, and other public places. To prevent this from ever happening again we banned guns in the new America” after Liliana said this I still felt confused, but still very curious! “So how did guns come about, did they do any justice at all or were they just bad?” I said anxiously. “Guns were originally used millions of years ago for something called war, but see guns destroyed our lands, and many of the people. We had to make the new America, because our land and resource got demolished by these wars where people used guns, and that is why it is forbidden from our community” said Liliana sternly. “Wow I guess the old America did do a lot of horrible things.” “Yes they did, but this was not the only horrible thing they did” said Liliana in disappointment.
As the days went on I got to see a machine gun, I even got to touch it, and observe it up close.
I even fired it once, the bullet went very fast and indeed destroyed all the nature around me. Although it was dangerous, it did help get the anger out. The cabin was lonely and sometimes I wished Aria was here to draw, or sing with me. But she was still upset at the fact she wasn’t picked to intern for anyone, I felt bad, but I had a lot of work to if I was expected to take over Liliana’s job. After two weeks passed Liliana moved on to a new topic, which was something called an electronic, I never heard of that, but it was an interesting word and I instantly became amazed by the idea of the electronic. “Now Emma, cell phones, computers, and tablets, all seem very cool, but they messed up society.” “How, this is the most innovative thing I have ever seen in my whole life!” “Right there you have an iphone invented by Steve Jobs he also created many other thing like the internet, and influenced many people during the old America. The problem with the electronic is no one focused on social or political problems in the old America, and if they did they were just listening to people’s opinions on these devices” said Liliana softly “Well it is still awesome even though they messed with people’s minds and how they think” I said unsurely because I was still so amazed by it in the back of my mind. “Next is that all these electronics caused bullying to other children, through something
called social media. Social media impacted the world by exposing many lies about a harmless person. Another thing you should think about is that many people tried or did commit suicide because their peers were being so hasty towards them. Finally you should think about the negative impact it had on the world, it showed false information, and it took away from education, as well as talking to another person face to face” said Liliana. “Wow” I said finally coming to my senses “the old America was not great at all, the 21st century (what Liliana always referred it to) was made up of superficial and careless people. They had too many problems, and never seeked out for help. Even though they had great inventions or what seemed to be great, they always affected the world negatively. My experience with Liliana was the best encounter of my life, she was a great teacher, and made me see the old America differently. But I picked you as my intern because I noticed how curious and how much you love to write, and in a year i’m up for disposal so you will have to take my job” I told my new intern Sasha with a big smile.
