Growing up in America provides children with the best possible environment. People in other parts of the world don’t have it nearly as well off as we have it here. Everyone is able to go to school; in fact it’s a law! Kids and teens in other countries would kill to be able to go to go to school at all. When we were kids in elementary school, we pretty much had zero worries about the world. The hardest question of the day was what color crayon to draw with. With a few exceptions, almost all of our decisions were made for us; what to eat, when to go to bed, when to wake up, where to go, and in my case, what to wear. I remember walking into the house a little after everybody else because my friend and me were throwing the football outside. When I walked into the house, everyone was group around the TV with their hands over their mouths and looks of sheer terror across all their faces. The date was September 11th, 2001. The day terrorists crashed two planes into the twin towers in New York City and another in the fields of Pennsylvania. I think that this was probably my first realization that things that were happening outside of my world were in fact real. However, the more and more I think about it, the more I am starting to realize that our generation is going to have to pick it up and start working harder if we are going to fill our parents shoes. In Government class, we learned that our generation is going to be the first that is not going to outperform our fathers in terms of success and money. This is partly because with the introduction of women into the workforce and each household having at least two working member, more money was available. It is my opinion, however, that our generation would be able to be more successful that our parents’ generation if we actually worked and cared about it. Many of our elders are very skeptical about our generation and our potential to run the country when it is our turn. Yet, our generation is the biggest in United States history numbering around 80 million of us. Therefore, some of us are going to have to rise up and accept the challenges and overcome the difficulties. These are the people that are going to make an impact on our country’s future. In fact, our generation already has somewhat of an impact on our country right now. Our choices when it comes to music, clothes, movies, and many other industries that our generation is part of drive
