Tibet my birthplace, Nepal where I spent most of my childhood days, India where I received my education and also the place where my grandparents resided. It was fascinating learning about various cultures, religion, and languages such as Tibetan, English, Hindi and Nepali. On February 2006, I was ecstatic moving to the United States of America and New York has been my new home for over a decade.
Despite the fact that I had settled in 3 countries, it took me a while to adapt the hustle-bustle of the city life. I got lost several times during my commute on the train ride and had difficulty finding my way around the city. I experienced culture

The course People, Work and Organizations was interesting, informative and the best course that I had taken because not only did I learn from the books but also this course prepared me for the real world such as writing a resume, cover letter, elevator pitch, informational interview and a lot more. I learned about the importance of behaving and dressing professionally, which I believe plays a vital role in a one’s life. I gained communication skills in this course since we had to do a presentation and I believe it is very useful as well as important since it allows us to be confident when speaking in public. This is also useful in the job setting.
This term I hope to get more internships, learn new skills, gain network connections, work experience. My main goal in life is to become CEO of my own company. Five years from now, I would have acquired the adequate knowledge in the field of business where I want to work. By interning with various companies, I will develop more skills and excel in the art of business and I will use all that experience to start my own

Gazing out of the airplane window, I saw the words Mei Guo— “beautiful country” in Chinese—painted on the airport terminal. My mother and I immigrated to America when I was a small child from Taishan, China. She aimed to remove me from a life where society would limit my options and ostracize me due to my father’s blindness from Retinitis Pigmentosa and the family’s lack of proper education. My father was willing to let go of his only child because he, too, knew it would open infinite opportunities for me to succeed. Though my new life in America seemed prosperous at first, I soon realized I needed to create opportunities for myself despite our lack of resources.…

Everyone has their own story, each one as unique as the next. Every day we encounter different people who have different experiences and different views of the world. Some, however, are closer to our stories than others. And when we meet someone extremely different from us, we tend to respond by finding the similarities in ourselves and them. Growing up with a dad in the military, and even after he left it, I lived in many different places. In every place the people were different. Every time we moved, I found myself attempting to learn how to fit in with this new group of people. This has made it easier for me to become friends with people I share almost nothing in common with. During my time living in Pennsylvania, my best friend was a girl…

Immigration has been a very large topic for United States government officials in recent years. Many people talk about the increase in immigrants from other nations, primarily from Mexico, and opinions vary between each person. It is suggested by some that immigrants cost native born Americans jobs and abuse resources like welfare that American taxes pay for. Others suggest that America’s economy is stimulated by growing immigrant populations and that workers help keep the American economy strong. Both arguments focus on the financial benefits that either getting rid of, or embracing, immigrants give to the United States. It is a selfish argument meant to appeal to American’s, but it does not take…

In Northern and Central America, there are thousands upon thousands of people who travel to the United states to try and solve their family’s financial crisis. A truly surprising idea; if people decide to work so hard for their families away from them, why not try to fix their problems where they are? The reason for this being brought up, is traveling to somewhere ‘better’ such as the United states will not always bring a much better fortune. The danger that ensues with traveling up to the US is far too dangerous, with gangs willing to rob, beat, or rape anyone that passes and police that show no mercy in brutality. Along with the dangers of just traveling up there, people in the United States can stand rather racist towards anyone they do not like.…

Many people come to the United States to attain their dreams and, at some point, earn the title of an American. It is a term that is thrown around often, but do we honestly know the true meaning? Recently, the entire nation has become divided over what it means to live and be a part of America. Therefore, as a writer for the Washington Post stated, “If we can’t agree on what being “American” really means, it’s going to be very hard to find common ground on anything else” (Cillizza). The term American is an abstract idea and cannot be completely defined. There are many elements to consider because everyone is different, but that is what makes America so special. It is home to a very diverse nation. The meaning behind being an American can be…

I was born in the city of Monterrey in Mexico. My family decided to move to the US in 2009 due to growing concerns of money and safety. Back then, Monterrey was considered one of the most dangerous places to live in Mexico, as the two main cartels were disputing over the territory. My dad had lost his job and my mom worked part time at a pharmacy. Because public school in Mexico is very poor, my mom had always had me enrolled in private schools. We were in a tight situation, we couldn’t pay for the house anymore and my dad was not having much luck in finding a new job. For this reason, my parents were practically forced to move to the US. After the long, expensive process of applying for visas and passports, we finally were able to move to the land of opportunity. We started from zero, there was absolutely no money in our pockets. I was a new student at a new school in a foreign country. I could not be more self-conscious at any other time in my life. All I could think about was how others saw me and how I fit in with…

People often say things about how the United States, with its revolutionary political and economic system, must have been around for a long time in order to achieve the world standing it holds today. This isn’t the case though. In fact, when compared to great civilizations like the Roman Empire which lasted almost 12 centuries, many would say that the United States is still in its infancy. Much in the same way, the political and economic systems the U.S. is famous for are seen to be derived from past civilizations as well. But this of course leads us to asking the inevitable questions of where did it all begin, and what caused people to settle here in America of all places. In order to answer this however, we have to look back past explorers and crusades. Past the kings, uprisings, revolts, and trade routes. We must go back in time to the Roman Empire itself, specifically in the year 476 BCE; the time when everything was falling apart in Rome.…
