Many people come to the United States to attain their dreams and, at some point, earn the title of an American. It is a term that is thrown around often, but do we honestly know the true meaning? Recently, the entire nation has become divided over what it means to live and be a part of America. Therefore, as a writer for the Washington Post stated, “If we can’t agree on what being “American” really means, it’s going to be very hard to find common ground on anything else” (Cillizza). The term American is an abstract idea and cannot be completely defined. There are many elements to consider because everyone is different, but that is what makes America so special. People flock to this country because of the equality it promises. Being a part of America means that you are free to be yourself. Everyone’s experiences and expectations are different inside this country. America is a place where different people can be different but still be considered equals as Americans. A person who comes to America needs to have come here for the right reasons, and need to be willing to completely want to be an American. Coming to America does not mean you must give up your culture or your traditions that you observed where you were born. Coming to America means that you can still practice your beliefs without threat of negative consequences. Everyone can be what they want and do what they want, within reason. You can express your opinions and have a say in the life you create here, whether you were born in America or not. Being an American means you can dress how you want and act how you want without fear of being penalized.
