I, Cierra Kahrs, have chosen medicine as my career. I know the road to my dreams will be rocky. Some days I may want to give up, do something easier, but I know that my end goal will be worth it. My dream of helping people on a global level is worth the years of schooling and the sleepless nights. I cannot wait for those sleepless nights because that will mean I am closer to my goal. A career in medicine requires perseverance, leadership, dedication, patience, compassion, and most of all, the love for helping people. These personal traits are essential to becoming an excellent healthcare provider.
The healthcare system is like the human body. It takes many systems working together simultaneously, to keep the patient alive. Just as the body

Providing well-child checkups for children who live in poverty and have never seen a doctor would greatly decrease their risk for health problems. Educating pregnant women about prenatal healthcare would be beneficial to both mother and child. Providing vaccinations for children will help lower the death rates. Safely delivering a baby and making sure the baby has regular checkups is critical for the well-being of both baby and mother. Although this is a small list of what I want to accomplish with Doctors Without Borders, it will help save many lives. We often take basic healthcare in United States for granted.
In conclusion, this scholarship would greatly help to further my education and to reach my goal of becoming a doctor. By investing in my education, you not only help me, but all my future patients. Education is the key to a successful healthcare system. We need to educate the public about the importance of the shortage of healthcare providers and the effects it can have on them. We need compassionate, dedicated healthcare providers to treat patients. I want to be at the forefront of educating, diagnosing, and treating patients. I, Cierra Kahrs, want to be a healthcare

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Waking up in the middle of the night coughing and gasping for air occurred on a regular basis for me as a child. I slept with an inhaler and a nebulizer next to my bed in the event of the next attack. My asthma attacks were frightening for my parents and especially for me as I felt as if I was on the verge of death whenever I suddenly could not breathe. Although I was always in and out of emergency rooms and doctor visits at a young age, having tried everything from nebulizer treatments to bronchodilators, I was always comforted by the doctors and nurses who always took the time to explain and alleviate any concerns and anxiety I had. Seeing their devotion to their profession and for patient care has motivated me to pursue graduate study in the field of nursing to invest my future to coordinate and implement quality healthcare for others.…

After the first week of shadowing, I started getting a sense of what it is to be a doctor. Becoming a doctor is not something easy. Every time I went to the office, there was a big list of patients that doctor Eloy had to meet. He had to be careful about the way he acts and the way he talks with patients, nurses, and other doctor. Even though it seemed so hard at the beginning, I enjoyed this experience and I learned a lot from it. I learned that being a doctor requires more than going to medical school. Medical school is just the first step. I learned that a…
