Personal Statement: An Interview Of Ed Fan
Ed Fan

Interview Hi, my name is Ed Fan and I’m from China. I was born in Harbin, China, as the only child in my family, no sisters and brothers; Harbin gets really cold during the winter. I moved to the U.S. in 2003 and English would be my second language. When I left China, I wasn’t ready to leave behind all my families and friends, but during the five years in the U.S., I’ve gained new friends and met people from all over the world, it’s really interesting to get to know people with different religions and ideas. I have many hobbies; I love to play basketball, baseball, tennis and football, I like them because they are really competitive and also because they are team sports, you’ll have to be a team player to be able to play them,

The person I interviewed was Mr. Hugh Jundies. Throughout the interview I tried to help Hugh by helping him process through his goal. I think this helped him really make sure the goal was his own and not someone else’s. After much processing he came up with his goal. His goal for the year is to do well in the blended program. This is important to him because he thinks that getting a higher GPA shows that he has higher dedication to the subject. He also feels as though, the more focus and time he puts into it, then the more knowledge and understanding of the subject. He also mentioned that getting great grades would make him feel better about himself. It also would prove to himself that he balanced his responsibilities well. After he told me…

As he continued his education into a Graduate degree, he starts not thinking too highly of the education his parents have. He started to feel embarrassed by his parents because they didn’t have much education. Rodriguez then started to distance himself from his family and pursued his educational goals. To him his education was more important than his family. Rodriguez does not understand the phrase, “Your parents would be proud." To have accomplished as much as he did of course his parents would be proud but it is no way they see it the same as he do because his education is much more advanced.…

Edward Kennedy Ellington was born April 29, 1899 in Washington, D.C. Ellington's parents James and Daisy actively supported his educational development. Duke had his first piano lesson at the age of seven or eight; this did not fancy him too much. At this time he was interested in baseball, which brought his first job as a peanut salesman at the Washington Senator's games. This helped Duke overcome stage fright, which was of use for the future to come. With his piano lessons fading in the past, he showed interest in the art. As a result he attended Armstrong Manual Training School to study commercial art instead of attending and academics-oriented school. As time went by Duke began to listen and seek out pianists in Washington,…

Tennis had been part of my life, since I first saw Roger Federer on the TV and it had been my favorite sport since then. Unlike other the athletes of other sports, a great tennis player has to be both intelligent and athletic. Also if you noticed the 2 flags that right by the drawing, it’s the flag of United States and the flag of China. I have lived in both countries, I do not know which one I enjoy more, but what I do know is both of them are important parts of my identity. Last, under my picture, there is a line that says, “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” That has been my motto since 7th grade, I came up with that line when watched the 32 years old Roger federer won the Wimbledon men’s…

Down in the locker room, one of my favorite coaches looked at my team and stated, “I’m sorry. I will not be returning next year to be your coach.” I sat there almost in tears, because at that moment my love for basketball almost left with him. Billy Martin was a favorite coach of mine. He loved each of us like one of his own, and treated all of us the same. He wanted each of us to succeed and would do anything to help us reach that. Coach Martin instilled in me no matter how talented a person was, you could always beat them by working hard. I could not believe he would not be my head coach next year, but he did soften the blow by saying he would still be around until we were use to our new head coach. We were all very upset about his department…

My life has revolved around soccer since I was four years old. My whole family was born into the sport and I’m so thankful that I have the support from my family and friends to continue to follow my dream in playing college soccer. I believe my life would not be the same without participating in the sport I love and playing with the people I grew up with. I wouldn’t have met half the people I know now. All my teammate’s families that treat me like their family would have been just imaginary. I wouldn’t have a second family to fall back on when I need. Soccer had made me for who I am. The reason I’m so competed and driven is because of the game. Soccer has helped me become a responsible hardworking young adult that doesn’t like to fail. My never-quit…

Having spent a large portion of my life in Japan, I expected that being “the new kid from Japan” would make me somewhat unique facilitating my acceptance into the group. The reality was, however, that my classmates were not interested in my Japan experiences. Many kids asked if I spoke Chinese or wanted to know why I didn’t have a Japanese name. Bringing in nori (seaweed) and onigiri (rice balls) for lunch only served to differentiate me further from my contemporaries. Consequently, I needed to adapt and find a different way to fit into my new school. I quickly learned that lacrosse was very prominent on Long Island, and came to realize that by playing lacrosse I could develop a common bond with my peers while channeling my competitive nature into a sport popular in the community. Through hard work, dedication and sacrifice, I have attained a respectable level of success in the sport of lacrosse, and have leveraged my achievements to carve out a niche within my social…

Sports have always played an important role in my life. Growing up my parents encouraged me and my brother to try a multitude of sports. From a very young age, my parents urged us to play what they categorized as a “life sports” along with team sports. In their eyes, a life sport is an activity you can play throughout your life. I continue to play golf, paddle tennis, tennis, and skiing today. During my elementary and middle school days I always wanted to be a part of a team, enjoying the comradery that came along with it. The sports I played included soccer, ice-hockey, lacrosse, and field-hockey. Eventually giving up soccer, I focused solely on stick sports. Playing these three sports allowed me to make many friends that…
