Hayley and I had a good experience at Dr. Mangelson’s office. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. While we waited for the doctor to prepare for his surgery, one of the hygienists, Karen, let us into her operatory to observe her scaling a patient’s teeth. She showed us a couple of instruments she loves and gave us some tips on working in private practice. She told us about how she and some other hygienists get together in a “study group” for continuing education. An interesting thing she told us is that Dr. Stanley Malamed was one of her professors at USC so she invited him to Utah to speak to several dentists in the area in two weeks.…

How to draw a blood specimen from a patient has a few steps that have to be followed or the specimen will be contaminated. The steps to draw blood are as follows; first, you need to assembly all your equipment – lab request, vaccutainer (the needle & tube holder), needle, tourniquet, & tubes; then, connect the vaccutainer and needle together. Using universal precautions and put gloves on and DO NOT rip off one of the fingers so you can feel better this will only put the phlebotomist at risk. The second step is to explain the procedure to your patient, this will help keep them calmer; then place the tourniquet around the arm, about quarter inch above the bend of elbow.…

Optimism: hopefulness and confidence about the future. The warm-hearted feeling you receive when you take a step back and glance for a moment at the resilient, robust nation built around you. The nation where everyone is free to express their uniqueness in gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation. The nation with stout defense and solid guard throughout all branches of military. It’s not a surprise we have the world’s largest economy, and the dollar is the world’s reserve currency. We are the only Super Power on planet Earth, and that is something to be proud of. Something that should give you optimism when you think of our homeland’s future. As home to more than 316 million Americans, we have the potential to do great things. Things superior to Earth itself. Hope for energy, and living clean and green. And hope for the education of our future generations- those who will be running this powerhouse into the indefinite future and continuing our uphill battle to excellence. With so much in store for the United States of America, I am so optimistic about our nation’s future.…

One of the biggest challenges I have faced was moving to America from Pakistan. The transition was difficult; I left childhood memories, family, and close friends behind. However, this portion of my life had a strong influence on the impact I want to have on impoverished populations. Seeing a dentist in Pakistan is a privilege that most of the families couldn’t afford. In those 17 years, it was rare for my family and I to have our teeth professionally cleaned or have a regular dental checkup. Dental insurance did not exist, and everything had to be, and still is, paid for in advance prior to seeing the dentist. Consequently, the majority of the Pakistani population have unsanitary dental hygiene. This sparked my interest in pursuing dentistry as a profession where I can help provide dental care to underserved…
