Fourth-year business student Elias Williams started his own fashion brand in hopes of making money to buy a new laptop.
During his first year at the University of Guelph-Humber, Williams and his friends created a sweater design.
“My friends and I were moving away as we were all going to different universities. We wanted to design a sweater that we could all have to remember our friendship,” Williams said.
Williams and his friends posted the designs on social media and they said that it immediately received attention.
“All our friends wanted one. At the time I needed to make more money to buy a new computer, so I stated taking orders,” Williams said.

Williams and his friends realized that they had a product that people liked.
They quickly created the name FLY 905 and begun to design more products. A brand that started off with sweaters now sells t-shirts, hats and bags.
Over the past three years, FLY 905 has earned over 32-thousand dollars. Something the group is proud of and continues to push them to keep going.
Williams said, “Our high points have been around black Friday and the Christmas holidays.”
As a result of the holiday rush, the website is currently off –line in till they restock in the spring. Williams hopes to expand the brand and continue to launch new products each year.
Williams said, “I want to release new trends based on what is hot in the market. Our main goal is to meet our customers needs and grow our business.”
Humber Collage Fashion Director Jennifer Dawson, said in order to grow a fashion business those starting out should find a mentor that believes in them and who can help them excel.
Dawson also said, “Growing your own fashion company can be achieved through a lot of hard work. It is not as glamorous as it appears and requires endurance, dedication, and tenacity.”
Dawson just finished hosting her second FGI Career night at Ryerson University.
The event took place on February 13th, 2017
FGI career night was designed for students to be introduced to the fashion industry and be able to get involved.
“This is an opportunity for students to meet fashion industry personnel and hopefully build a strong network. It also allows them to work on their business communication skills.” Dawson said.
Guelph-Humber Project Management professor Aida Memisevic said that networking is the key to a successful business. She believes that it is all about whom you know and how they can help you accomplish your goal.
Memisevic said,“ When networking the number one thing is to think about what the win-win is. How can your company benefit the other party? You must be creative with your thinking, don’t think it’s always about
money.”
She also said that well-known companies are always looking for fresh new ideas.
When young designers are approaching these companies they should be flexible and cooperative in till they have them on their side.
Memisevic believes that the key to a successful business is planning ahead.
“In order to grow your business you have to look at what your goal is. Once you establish where you want to be, you then move backwards and figure out what you have to do to get there,” Memisevic said.
For Williams his goal is to build experience and be able to show the skills he has learned throughout his fashion brand.
Williams said “My ultimate goal for the company is to use it for business experience. It will be a portfolio piece that I can push into the real world when I graduate.”
