I aspire to become a strong source of constant comfort and support to those in need of assistance. My communal contributions consist of walkathons for cancer additionally I will be volunteering to help the homeless and local animal shelter by collecting donations and raising money for both causes. Being able to…

While I enjoy the typical classroom setting, I often found myself unable to engage in conversation or ask questions as I constantly felt as though I was behind on note taking. With prerecorded lessons, interactive online settings, and a smaller cohort, I believe that I will be better prepared to provide my input and engage in strong discussions with my peers. Specifically, about the effects of programs on youth and dealing with crisis situations. As an individual in the middle of a transitionary period in her life, as I am looking to switch jobs, an online degree also allows me the flexibility to move without having to worry about transferring out of the program. One thing that I found particularly intriguing about Simmons’ program is that it provides its students the ability to choose one of four clinical specializations. While I have an interest in both Child and Family and Trauma and Interpersonal Violence, I find satisfaction knowing that my classes will be tailored to my specific needs and that when I do choose a specialization, I will be receiving a strong education based on both classroom and field experience in that…
Certainly, having grown up in a culture that there process of discipline and training in the most family was by flogging whip, palm fronds spank, spank with a tree switch, beating with a bamboo stick, backs slap, slapping butt, face slapping, punching or twisting ears, and hands beating. In the same way, all these beaten are not seen as an element of abuse by virtue of the pain it gives the individual. It is a measure of tutoring a child showing the gravity of his or her action was not acceptable to the family, kindred, and community. Having seen these corporal punishments, my career as a social worker will advocate for a positive change in child parenting.…

Can you imagine that your life could change by programs you are involved in? That is what happened to me. Last year, I joined TAPP (Teen Advocate for Pregnancy Prevention) which meant I had to communication with youths that did not want to listen. I had to be very creative and sometime be an actor to get my point across to the youths. I began to realize that God gave me a gift to communicate and act so I needed to pursue this major.…
My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…
My name is Abby Shonk and I talked with you Monday about changing my major to social work. After looking at the Fall/2017 schedule you made for me I had a question about taking bio and sw320 in the same semester. I noticed that in order to take sw320 I must complete a bio class. Can I take sw320 and bio at the same time or do I have to have bio completed? I received a D in the class so does that mean I can still take sw320 because I…
I grew up in a typical Mexican household in southwest Detroit, and it was not until recently when I became aware of what this meant. Being a Latino student in this country means I am not expected to make it far; it means the higher success I reach in academia, the lonelier I will become. “A Mexican boy, from a dirt-poor village, from Detroit, go to college? HA. Good luck with that.” These discriminatory ideas that society tries to implant in me only strengthen and encourage me to strive for greater success. I am proud to say that breaking stereotypes has become a hobby for me. I am at the top of my class, an active member of my community, have leadership positions in several organizations, I perform professionally in a cultural band, and I even compete in soccer year-round. While people of my background are consistently trapped at the bottom of the social hierarchy, I am proud of who I am and I would not change it for the world. My low socioeconomic status and the racial marginalization I suffer in this country has made me the vibrant young man I am today and formulated my long-term goal to rid my family from the shackles of…

My main interest is helping people, and I feel that becoming a social worker will allow me to do so. It will allow me to get out and meet a variety of different people and it will be challenging. By being challenged in this field I believe it will aknowledge my strengths and weaknesses and help me to become a stronger person in the field of social work. I believe that every child deserves someone who cares for them and can speak up for them when no one else will. I hope that I will be able to help people in difficult times in their lives and change them for the better.…
Key Club is an organization of young people who volunteer to help different establishments. During my junior year in high school, I was the junior board member and I had the opportunity to help each of the juniors who were involved with Key Club. When I started attending the University of New Mexico, I began to work towards becoming a chaperone. I have volunteered at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, The Weems Art-Fest, Light the Night, the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and many other great organizations. I have volunteered in donations and fundraisers for the needy. I wanted to join Key Club because I enjoy learning about the…
