Personal Statement: The Captone Program
Everyone is asked one question, at a very young age. That question is: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” There isn’t a time I can remember when an adult didn’t ask me this question. When I was six, I would respond with the usual movie star, fashion designer, or veterinarian. My answer would be said confidently, as at this age I walked through life as if it were no big deal. My answer occasionally changed to fit with my many childhood phases, but my view on the question stayed the same. When I was a child, I replied to this inquiry the same way everyone else did; I answered with an occupation. It took me years to discover my new approach to this question. My new response did not include my dream job, but how I saw myself in the future. …show more content…

The family system capstone course was an eye-opening experience where I could learn through hands on activities. Personally, I am a kinesthetic learner, so the capstone project allowed me to learn more about my community and myself through various hands-on opportunities outside the classroom. Coming up with a capstone project was challenging because Alaina and I didn’t know what we wanted to do, but at the time, we had an area of interest in homelessness so, we contacted Love Inc to get us started. We ended up job shadowing one of the employees who took phone calls and directed that individual to the area of help in which they needed. Listening to phone calls all morning wasn't very interesting and we didn’t find any holes besides technology based with their system so, we abandoned that project. We contacted numerous of other agencies, none of whom responded besides the CAP agency. Once we found an agency, the capstone project came to us pretty easily.…

I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. Not because there was nothing I found appealing, but because I felt passionate about too many things. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

What do I want to be when I grow up? Quite honestly, from my observations and experiences you won’t really know until the time comes. We all experienced those days where we would dream to have a high paying job. Saying “ I want to be a doctor”, “I want to be a fire fighter”. However, eventually, we will encounter good and bad scenarios that will change our perspective on what we really want to do in the future. My name is Jacoby Cid, and this past summer I have experienced an extraordinary opportunity that had the capability to help me decide what I want to do with my future. The summer of 2013, I was offered an internship to work for the infamous movie company, Relativity Media Studios. I like to label this internship as a turning point in my life.…

The following day, I was sitting on my couch attempting to watch television, while still distracted from the occurrence. My father had just returned from work, and after hanging his coat on the clothing rack, he sat on the couch next to me with a very sullen look on his face. He looked into my eyes and I instantly diverted my attention away from the television. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” he asked. I was searching for the right words. I used to say I wanted to be an astronaut or…

When I was in preschool my teacher asked us what we want to be when we grow up, I was five then and I didn't know what I want to be, so I answered teacher since I have no other choice. A few days later I went to the dentist for my very first appointment, she gave me a free pen and I thought this would be fun to just give out free things to little kids, so I want to be a dentist then. My perspectives as a child were really irrelevant. But as I grew up I began to wonder what I really want to be and my first step to finding out what it is, is by asking my parents and the other adults around me what they do for a living. The occupation that really caught my attention was my aunt's and grandfather's , they are lawyers and when I found out how much they earn and how much they could earn, that is when I really got riled in. I always see myself as a very successful lawyer. Because I know that I always try my best in everything I do. I try to be involved in things and offer the help that is needed. I think I got that from my grandfather who was also a lawyer and public servant. He helps people and I admired him that way. He was the one who really motivated me to be a lawyer, besides the fact that he want someone to take over his legacy, he really believes that someday I will fulfill my dreams. As years pass by I never stop believing even when I was faced with a few obstacles. One of those obstacles was the lack of money. I can't study in the finest school here since we're not rich, I have four siblings who are still studying and a grandfather who was diagnosed with brain tumor it was a difficult time for me and my family because of the extra expenses that we have to cove, sometimes we managed to juggle those things around but sometimes we just have to bear with it. And recently my greatest obstacle came around. My grandfather died, my grandfather really believes in me, and now I am determined to be a lawyer to continue what he started and…

When was the last time you asked yourself “What do I want to be when I grow up?” If you really think about it, this is a loaded question that has the potential to be a simple tool in helping us focus on our goals in life, and guide the choices we make. However, I find the typical response is one that involves only the professional career choice of the individual. “I want to be a doctor....” “I want to be a professional basketball player....” “I want to be a graphic designer….” Is your career choice really what you will be as a person? Does that kind of answer truly explain what you plan to do with your life and how you will use your most precious resource: time? And what indicates when you’ve reached that “grown up” status? Isn’t “grow” by definition an ongoing process? As we grow into ourselves, we are always learning, always working, always being, and always doing something.…
