The family system capstone course was an eye-opening experience where I could learn through hands on activities. Personally, I am a kinesthetic learner, so the capstone project allowed me to learn more about my community and myself through various hands-on opportunities outside the classroom. Coming up with a capstone project was challenging because Alaina and I didn’t know what we wanted to do, but at the time, we had an area of interest in homelessness so, we contacted Love Inc to get us started. We ended up job shadowing one of the employees who took phone calls and directed that individual to the area of help in which they needed. Listening to phone calls all morning wasn't very interesting and we didn’t find any holes besides technology based with their system so, we abandoned that project. We contacted numerous of other agencies, none of whom responded besides the CAP agency. Once we found an agency, the capstone project came to us pretty easily.
Our project was adopting a classroom at a head start preschool program in Chaska. The classroom we adopted had 17 children so, my partner Alaina and I went to outside businesses looking for school supply donations. For the capstone project, we were mainly working with our mentor …show more content…
Joe, who is the CEO of the Cap agency as well as his assistant Jennifer. They helped connect us to a classroom as well as overseeing our project. However, we ran into some troubles when they weren’t very good at communicating with us as they took quite a while to respond to some of the emails, which as a result delayed our project. This was frustrating throughout the project because we couldn’t move forward in other areas like asking businesses for school supplies when we didn’t know how many children we were adopting.
The backpack giveaway to the classroom was successful and we were able to reach our goal of collecting supplies for 17 children and having extra supplies that we also donated to the classroom. It seemed like the kids enjoyed receiving their backpacks and us doing activities with them as we spent our morning with them. Working with the children was one of the greatest experiences because I love putting a smile on kids faces and our project did exactly that. Even though this was not our initial project, I was still interested in this area.
Our project, which involved working directly with people in our community has taught me life long skills including working on my feet, leadership abilities and it helped further my learning of basic jobs skills.
Overall, this experience was very rewarding because we created nothing into something and as a result our project helped families who generally have lower incomes have the necessary school supplies for their children to be successful in school without forcing them to give up something else up. This project has opened my eyes to things happening around me and allowed me to become a more active and engaged community member while I was able to delve deeper into something that I'm interested and passionate
about.
