Personal Wellness: A Case Study

Mrs. Neal is a 83 years young and lives with her daughter, Carol in New Stanton, PA. Mrs. Neal was married to her husband, James who passed away in 2006. Together the two had three children together. One son, Tom and two daughters, Carol and Pam. Carol is the primary contact for Senior Helpers. She used to work for Royer's department store and for Charley Brothers Super Valu in the accounting department. She is a member of the United Methodist church in New Stanton, PA.

She loved to travel and has been on many cruises, including trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Europe. Mrs. Neal now enjoys reading on her kindle and watching television, especially HGTV, National Geographic, and the History channel. She likes to be active and get out on walks.
Neal is bowel and urine continent and is independent in ambulation and transfers. She uses no assistive devices to get around. Even though she is independently mobile, Mrs. Neal must be supervised and monitored at all times because she can become unsteady. She dresses and grooms herself, but the caregiver should monitor to ensure Mrs. Neal is maintaining proper hygiene. She likes to bathe/shower once a week. Mrs. Neal is hard of hearing in her right ear. The caregiver should be sensitive to this as she doesn't wear a hearing aid. The caregiver may have to speak up. Mrs. Neal also wears glasses because she experiences double vision. The caregiver should also be sensitive to Mrs. Neal's difficulty with using the telephone. Its hard for her to use. The caregiver should help Mrs. Neal make calls and answer the phone when need be.

Mrs. Neal needs reminded to eat lunch. She is losing weight because she forgets to eat. It is essential that the caregiver prepares a nutritious lunch for her. Its important to note she is allergic to butter/ cream, it gives her diarrhea. She takes her medicine with her lunch and the caregiver needs to make sure she does. The family handles getting Mrs. Neal breakfast, but in the event the family isn't able to the caregiver should offer to get her
Neal do laundry. The laundry is located in the basement. The caregiver should help carry the laundry to and from the basement. The caregiver should also help with other household chores; such as, vacuuming and dusting, and be sure to engage and involve Mrs. Neal in these activities. Mrs. Neal does have dementia and is a diamond on the Senior Gems scale so its important for the caregiver to help engage in her in familiar tasks.

PRIMARY CAREGIVER RESPONSIBILITIES:

2. Ensure client has taken medicine with lunch
3. Help client carry laundry to and from basement
4. Engage and involve client in housekeeping duties
