In paragraph two it talks about the Declaration of Independence. In which Clark alludes to the Declaration of Independence to support her thesis. Referring to paragraph one when she states that “which life should be better and richer and fuller” she says this to refer to the Declaration of Independence when it talk about life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. quote is “ that all men are created equal”. This supports her thesis because she links the unalienable right as the true American Dream or at least the basics of it.
The American Dream is attainable for everyone, but everyone sees the American dream in their own way. Clark states that “immigrants who came to the United States looking for a bit of life ,liberty and pursuit of happiness” meaning that they wanted the best for their loved ones and to be happy. As for the veteran of World War II she states that “to settle down. to have a home, a car and family” by definition of this quote states that all they wanted was to take their mind of the tragedy that had happened to them.
The three definitions of the American Dream are “people work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes” (Clark 1) meaning that if they have those things they have already reached the American dream.
For others the American dream is “ working two jobs to insure their family’s survival”(Clark 1) this states, that if they get two jobs so they can support their loved ones which shows they have met the dream. Others say that “ new American Dream with less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a simple, fulfilling life”( Clark 1) this is one of the third definition that people have as for the American Dream. Quote states that it's what makes you happy that's the Dream, not by having the things, but by having the joy with your loved
ones.
Thomas Wolfe says in his quote “ to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining, golden opportunity...the right to live,to work ,to be himself, and to become whatever things his manhood and his vision can combine to make him”. This quote means that no matter the raise, color or if their rich or poor, just be yourself ,you can become whoever you want if you believe it. this quote does match my definition of the American Dream because I do believe no matter the race you are if you want to be someone in life you have to go out there and get it for yourself because no one else can do it for you but yourself. Nothing will be easy, we all have to work together for what we think is the American Dream. This is why I believe Thomas Wolfe had the right idea of an American Dream.
