A popular subject in pop culture is Zombies. The show the Walking dead has only increased the popularity of zombie based films, books, games, and television shows. Those shows bring forth questions about survival. What would you do in that situation? How would you prepare? The same questions could be asked with any type of emergency. According to Elizabeth Landau, " There are insights that we gain from movies ...that really can help us think about the way that science works... ( Landau 2)" Another topic of debate that is brought to the spotlight is murder. If someone becomes a zombie is it right to kill them? Is that murder or self defense? How far gone is gone? Zombies are no longer the humans they once were,and are a threat to humans, and
need to be exterminated. Therefore the most important thing in the occurrence of a zombie apocalypse is a strategic plan using ideals of communitarianism, weaponry, and living supplies (such as food, water, clothes, and medications).
If a zombie apocalypse were to take place the first step would be creating a strategy and choosing a method."Communitarianism is the idea that societies prosper most and best when citizens cooperate (Murray 1)." Individualism deviates for communitarianism completely, and is strongly rooted in the philosophy of self-reliance (Murray 1). Both ideas have opposed each other and manifested themselves within politics since the creation of the United States (Murray 1 ). Communitarianism is the most effective approach to a zombie apocalypse and in any emergency. For example, say the United States sent one soldier to fight World War Two. The Strength of weaponry or amount of supplies would have no effect on the outcome… the soldier would die . The same idea can be applied to fighting an infestation of zombies. It would not only take a community to kill a large group of zombies, but also a strategic plan. Last October, Hurricane
Matthew hit the Southeast part of the United States and left a large portion devastated. Thousands of people came to the aid of those affected, and did anything they could. It took teams or groups to help with the clean up effort. Those victims were not left to fend for themselves, and no one should be left behind in a zombie apocalypse. The theme of communitarianism can also be found in popular science fiction movies and books. The Hunger games is a prime example of this. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist is naturally an individualistic thinker, but she finds that it is that thinking that will leader her to die in the area. Before allying with another tribute she struggled to survive. After allying with other tributes not only did she survive the arena, but she won and saved the life of someone else. Even within American government the President has his cabinets and advisers to assist him in making large decisions. Plus there are three branches of government rather than one.
Another topic of debate is extermination of zombies.
Technically you are murdering a human, but they lack all things that make a person a person. Plus they are murderers themselves and have no pure motive behind it except lusts for food. According to Hamish Thompson, "after zombification they are homicidal cannibalistic killers." There is no way to save someone after they are bitten by a zombie. They are no longer the human they were. The virus that causes zombification is called Ataxic Neurodegenerative satiety deficiency syndrome. It is caused by a protein called prion, which happens to also cause bad cow-disease (Landau 1). Basically it kills all of your brain except the Amygdala, which explains why they only eat, moan, and have problem with moving (Landau 1). The slow gnawing away of the brain is probably painful both physically and emotionally, so it would be the humane thing to do to put the victim out of their misery (Landau 1).. Another justification for the termination of zombies is self-defense. It is either you or them. They will be no good to society, which means you are the better choice. To kill a zombie you must attack what is left of the brain (Landau 2). Therefore shooting a zombie in leg will do nothing, but possibly slow it down. In order to kill anything you must have weapons, which can be used for slaying zombies or food. After while you are going to work up an appetite running from brain hungry zombies, so having a knowledge of hunting would come
in handy. The weapons that would be most useful during a zombie attack would be knifes, traps, guns, grenades, and maybe even swords. It might come in handy when decapitating zombies.
Along with a strategy and weapons it is also very important to have supplies to live off of such as water, food, medications, clothing, and even toiletry items. Without these thing killing zombies will not even matter because you will die of starvation, dehydration, or medical issues. Taking care of yourself should be your first step in trying to survive. Even the CDC agrees that medications, sanitation and personal hygiene, and medical supplies are among the crucial supplies in cases of emergency such as a zombie apocalypse ( Zombie emergency kit 1 ). Another thing to take into account is the climate of where you live. For example if you live in the desert water will be a hard resource to come by. Food storage is another very great way to prepare for a zombie apocalypse. Going outside a safe house will be risky, so having a few extra weeks of food and water is definitely a good idea. sanitation and hygiene products are also something you might want to address. Bacteria can also kill you so sanitation is key. Plus after killing zombies all day it might be nice to clean off blood and other bodily fluids.
To be successful in anything preparation is key. In order to prepare we must be informed and know what we are up against. Zombies may have been humans, but they are not the same person. They lack everything a human has. Zombies do not have morals or memories. Their only instinct is to eat human brains. That is where practicing self defense is a valid excuse for murder. In case of a zombie apocalypse was to occur before hand there must be preparation. first create a plan with your family, friends , and neighbors. Discuss food and water storage, safe house plans, and emergency equipment. Also make sure everyone knows how to use all the equipment including the weapons. Lastly make sure everyone knows about each other's medical conditions.
Lastly make sure their is some communication device that will be effective during an apocalypse.
In the occurrence of a zombie apocalypse the most crucial parts to survival are Communitarianistic strategies, weapons, and living supplies.
