High school is the point in your life where you should really start thinking about where you see yourself in ten, twenty, even fifty years down the road.
You should start thinking about what college you want to go to and what you want to major in. The first major step in looking towards your future is researching careers that fit your interests and abilities. What is so wrong with society today is the fact that everyone is so driven by money. No one wants to face the fact that not everyone will be millionaires when they grow up. When choosing a career, it shouldn’t be about what career makes the most money. It should be about what you enjoy and are very good at. I am an example of being very money hungry. My entire life I wanted to be some kind of doctor so that I could have that nice six-figure salary. As I got older, I realized that life is more than how much money you have in your bank account. It is about being as happy as you can be, and that can all begin with choosing the right career for
you.
After figuring out a career that will put your abilities to good use, start researching colleges that specialize in your field of study. You don’t have to go to a school that specializes in your field of study, though. Almost all universities have virtually the same majors. Most of the time people can find their intended major at any school. You should still look into that specific school’s programs, because it is important to know the details of any school you are looking into. (ask about this last sentence)
When your major is decided, start looking into schools. So much can go into what makes the “perfect” college. Most people worry the most about location and price. For me, location was everything. I wanted a school located in a big city, because I wanted to know what it was like to live in an urban area. If location is a big thing to you, research colleges in your targeted areas. When you find the colleges in that area, make sure to check out the list of majors that they offer to make sure that they can accommodate your needs.
College is expensive. Everyone knows that. That is why, for some, price is the biggest factor to consider when looking into colleges. If money is holding you back, think of alternative ways to help make your way through college. Maybe start off by going to a community college. By going to a community college first, you get all of you general education courses out of the way without paying the absurd tuition costs at the bigger universities. If community college isn’t for you, apply for as many scholarships as you can. Even if you don’t get all of the scholarships that you applied for, you will probably receive at least a little bit of money that can help out with the cost of college. There is also financial aid and student loans. Financial aid and student loans are something almost every college students uses. Don’t let the cost of college discourage you.
The next step in picking the right college is to go on visits to your target schools. The reason that visiting the schools that you are interested in is important is because sometimes you won’t like the school once you get there. When you look at colleges on the internet or in brochures, they make the schools look a lot better than what they are. By taking the visits, you will be able to really see the school, rather than what they want to show you in pictures.
People always say that when you visit a school and feel very comfortable there, then it is the right school for you. It is a very true statement. When I decided to start visiting colleges, the very first one I visited felt like home to me. Right then and there I knew that that was the school for me, but I wanted to make sure. I visited a school later on in Florida, and as beautiful as it was, I didn’t feel the same security and comfort that the other school provided for me. That is why choosing a college based strictly off of what you see in pictures is naive. You don’t really get to feel the sense of comfort that a school can provide for you. So when you want to start looking into schools, make sure you schedule visits so that you can really decide based on where you feel the most at home.
College searches can be tough. There is so much that goes into them. Location, price, types of majors, you name it, it can probably be considered a concerning factor when deciding on your college. But what I have realized through the course of my search is that wherever you feel most comfortable, that is where you should go. College is, for most, an extra four or more years of schooling. It is important to choose the college where you feel the most at home, because it becomes your new one. Don’t let the little things discourage you. Go after your dreams no matter what you may think is stopping you. Life doesn’t just stop after high school. It actually begins. That is why finding the perfect college and major is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your entire life. So don’t let life end after high school, let it begin.
