Persuasive Speech On Food Labeling

It's important to have my voice heard, which is why I always vote. This allows me to voice my concerns when I find it necessary to express them. Previously, I had written to you when I had concerns about Congress making cuts to the social security benefits. I have now come across some other concerns that I had to voice, regarding our nation's food safety. Individual states are looking to create legislation that would allow them to establish their own food-labeling process. This would cause prices to increase, as well as confusion for the consumers. The FDA has protected our food supply for well over 100 years. It was contrived for the sole purpose of safeguarding our food supply. It's important that the FDA continues with this process, which is why I support the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015. This would allow the FDA to create a single national standard for food labels and clear, set definitions for terms such as non-genetically modified foods.
Fortunately, there isn't anyone in my family who has food allergies, so I don't have to worry about specific ingredients. However, there are a lot of consumers who have allergies or health issues. It could turn into a life threatening situation if an item of food wasn't labeled correctly, or if all the ingredients weren't disclosed. This is why it's crucial that labels are uniform across the country. In addition, some consumers don't mind genetically modified foods, while others would prefer to have food that was GMO-free. With a national standard, the FDA would verify if an item truly was GMO-free before a manufacturer could place that term on their label.
