You may not be of voting age, but if you get a heartwarming story or enough people to care, those in authority over the people will begin to care. A good reason things aren’t being …show more content…
accomplished, may be that no one is aware of what is going on, and it could be up to you to change that. If a single raindrop falls onto the ground it will not affect much, but if it begins to pour, the entire landscape can be drastically altered. More often that not is it up to you to vocalize your cause, because if you don’t, who else will? Sometimes all you have to do is get your message to the masses, not directly to the president to see a difference. This is a good message because a five year old can do this, a teenager can do this, an adult can do this, and most anyone can do it.
For instance, not long ago a local news channel did a story on a homeless teenager who is working hard to get a degree and maybe a scholarship. This is known as a human interest story because it captures others attention and moves them emotionally. How is she helping anyone but herself? Her story can inspire those in similar situations, and those who aren’t through the classic “If she can do it, I cando it.” If this story were to go viral and all those inspired were to truly “Follow in her footsteps” then through sociology we can estimate: the crime rate would go down, the economy would go upward, and they would be more likely to have a more stable future.
Another forefront example is Disney’s Make a Change.
They use stars to encourage kids to save energy, therefore saving the planet. They have over two and a half million pledges, and all they did was getting their message out there, instead of using it for commercial time. Do you think they came up with this all by themselves? It’s possible, but chances are someone pitched this idea to them because of their huge audience. This also uses positive reinforcement, because if a child is doing enough for their cause, the stars will visit them and come help them with it. Also, Disney uses votes to decide how they will donate a million dollars to environmental charities around the world.
Start a petition. If you care enough about something, and you can’t get people’s attention, at least get their signatures. This will show that they are standing behind your cause, and once you get enough signatures, consider it done. This is a direct route to politics, through the people. This will only take a second of someone’s time, and most people do not mind. All the resources needed are a pen, ink, and paper. Remember to keep it looking professional, because your overall goal is for important politicians to see …show more content…
it.
As a teenager, do my state representatives represent me? In a way, yes they do. It’s always a good idea to have a reasonable, voting adult to speak on your behalf though. Some of them care, some of them may not. It’s always a good idea to do your research on each representative before you contact one, hoping they will be sympathetic to your individual case. It’s probably a good idea to have statistics and how exactly they can be of service in mind before you present your case.
Laws and bills do take a long time though, so if you have succeeded in getting your representatives attention, now you should try to get everyone else’s.
It may seem like a waste of time, but the more media attention something gets, the more likely they are to take a closer look at it, and faster. Also, this way if it gets tossed out, you won’t be the only one upset and you won’t have to react alone. That is key because other people have different areas in which they can influence others, and as a teenager, chances are yours isn’t as big as a CEO’s.
Sadly, there are a very few to no politically active organizations in the immediate McLoud area. Luckily though, now we have the internet. Why does this matter? Because now you can join almost anyone around thee world to discuss politics and ways to make a political or social change. This is an advantage that someone like Rosa Parks never had, that you a meager teenager, do. So, if you feel inspired or now relieved that you have a political voice in a world full of those yelling their political opinion, I urge you to use it.
