While team effectiveness can be judged by measuring the productive output of the team, many authors have attempted a more holistic approach to the analysis of team effectiveness. A team is a collection of individuals organized to accomplish a common purpose, who are interdependent, and who can be identified by themselves and observers as a team.
The qualities that a leader must possess to make an effective team are; honesty, compassion, loyalty, mercy and care. Every [leader] ought to desire to be considered clement and not cruel, he ought to be slow to believe and to act, nor should he himself show fear, but proceed in a temperate manner with prudence and humanity, so that too much confidence may not make him incautious and too much distrust render him intolerable (Machiavelli). The way one would be sufficient enough to lead his people is that, he has to be forgiving, not react to situations so quickly and listen to his subjects and show compassion. For example, if a coach of cross country decides to be harsh and unforgiving, athletes are more likely to quit or develop hatred which would lead to the downfall of the team.
To understand how a group operates it is necessary not only to look that the role of the group leader but also at the roles of the individual members of the group.Let each [individual] come to know his own ability,If we have a choice we shall work faithfully at those things that are
most suitable to us. If necessity pushes us into affairs...alien to our [individual nature], complete care, forethought, and application must be brought to bear...we should act with as much fitness as possible (Cicero). For example, in a relay race, the team members must work together in passing the baton from one person to another in order to achieve success. Team members must listen attentively, be obedient, support
