Creative Sparks Talk Analysis Sir Kenneth Robinson is a published author and a teacher who is inspiring others to question whether the education system is appropriate for today’s learning environment. He believes that the current education system in place in schools today should incorporate more creativity and questionable thinking by students, instead of being forced to follow what has always been done by those before us. During a TED conference in May 2014, he gave a speech entitled “How Schools Kill Creativity”. Although the main bullets of his message pointed out how the current curriculum looks down on individual creativity in the classroom, he …show more content…
was also able to make clear his position on changing the mundane thinking of how creative instruction can be presented to children.
How do Sir Kenneth Robinson’s talks illuminate some of the changes in creativity? Sir Kenneth Robinson speech began with speaking about how we as a society have become so focused on the importance of educating our youth. After which, he pointed out that children have the amazing ability to learn and grasp concepts quickly, and by not taking advantage of that quality, we are wasting valuable talent relying on the current learning systems which are in place today. He referenced how today’s society believes it is doing the right thing by trying to prepare our children for years in the future, even though we have no idea what the future holds for this ever-changing society. By utilizing the four stages of creativity, it is clear that the current educational curriculum suppresses the creativity in young minds, even when it is obviously trying to get out of some of today’s youth.
According to Ryan Ruggiero, the first stage is basically looking for “meeting challenges in an imaginative, original, and effective way” (Ruggiero, 2012). The second stage, is expressing the problem or issue. Ryan Ruggiero states that “different expressions open different avenues of thought it is best to consider as many expressions as possible” (Ruggiero, 2012). Sir Kenneth Robinson talked about how the current education system has become so much more focused on areas such as mathematics and science, and less about the creative arts. According to Robinson, although children are energetic and eager to take chances, they cannot answer questions if they are intimidated to step out of their comfort zone and willing to risk being wrong in front of their peers. Stage three is in my opinion the most important stage, and it has to do with investigating the problem. You must make sure you acquire the necessary details in order to be effective in order to face the issue at hand. Finally, stage four entails coming up with relative and logical ideas. Generating good ideas to select from is paramount when it comes time to choose which action you finally go with. Sir Kenneth Robinson makes a note that some of the largest challenges with creativity and children are …show more content…
children “do not grow into creativity, we grow out of it” (Robinson, 2012).
How do Sir Kenneth Robinson’s talks relate to the concepts of imagination and curiosity?
Practically all of Sir Kenneth Robinson’s speeches revolved around having imagination and being creative. Sir Kenneth Robinson talked about today’s society and how it has become so reliant on pursuing through life, and grading accomplishments by the level of difficulty accomplished taken in order to get to that point. He discussed in detail how this rise through the ranks in order to get there is too centered on answering questions correctly and the attention given when any mistakes might happen, and saying this is essentially the worst thing one can do.
How do some of the points made in the talk apply to some of your personal experiences and benefit society as a
whole? I can recall way back when I was in middle school, and I was not doing so well due to the simple fact that just could not test well. Of course I would do great on just about everything else, it was just when it came down to test time, my mind would just freeze-up on me. This test-taking struggle continued on for years, and I feel this is why I enjoy the virtual format when testing anymore. While testing, I would easily get distracted by thoughts and ideas in my mind and lose focus on the point of the questions on the test.
In conclusion, I feel it seems simple to notice how some changes to the education system makes sense, and the world could use more out-of-the-box thinking in everyday life. Especially when you step back and look at some of the problems in the world today, and how they could possibly be resolved through deliberate creative thinking, if it would have been introduced to them at a earlier age. The Robinson talk was a simple but eye opening talk, and it has forced me to rethink what is being placed on my children in the public schools she is attending.
