There are no boundaries to the expectations of a physical therapist; physical therapy is an art, where the hands become the very medication that cures the sick. Many people think that the job of a physical therapist is merely to aid people who suffer from any form of physical pain that impedes their ability to function in their daily lives. It is true that from minor injuries, such as waking up on the wrong side of the bed, to the recovery process of a broken limb, it is the job of a physical therapist to hasten the rehabilitation of their patients. However, there is more—the role of a physical therapist is also to strengthen and help prevent future injuries.

It is a day shift that requires one to be at work from 7:30a.m to 6:30p.m (Kaiser). The working hours vary across the different Health Maintenance Organization Hospitals to a small extent. The reason why they only have day shift is because, unlike other healthcare professions, a physical therapist does not deal with emergency care.
Physical therapists in the Health Maintenance Organization Hospitals do not have the choice of specializations; they are expected to be able to treat all types of physical illnesses that the patients suffer from. When working with patients, the physical therapists teach certain exercises that are in direct correlation to the ailment that the patients suffer from. Sometimes, these exercises require the use of equipment that would better aid them in recovery. The equipment they have for the patients is a wide variation. Just to name a few, they have the Swiss ball which is mainly used for strengthening the core muscles and restoring body-balance. They also have Thera-bands, which are rubber tubes that allow patients to work on their intricate muscles such as their rotators cuff. In addition, there is the use of hydrotherapy, in which patients will submerge their muscle injuries in ice cold water to prevent further inflammation. During the course of the day, they are expected to be on their feet most of the time. They walk from one station to another, wherever the required equipment is placed. Whenever physical therapists are treating people that have difficulty walking, they are required to provide support by gently lifting them up and catching them before their legs give way (Physical Therapists). These patients generally suffer from a stroke or a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
