Which social media, between Instagram and Pinterest, do students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2016 prefer?
Hypothesis:
Instagram is the preferred, social media at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.
Aims:
1. To find out which social media, between Instagram and Pinterest consumes the most data?
2. To find out which social media, between Instagram and Pinterest has the preferred appearance?
3. To find out which social media, between Instagram and Pinterest gives off the most information?

just one of the many platforms in which one can achieve this adrenalin. These Social Medias are very similar, that it is no surprise that they have been compared many times before. According to aabacosmallbusiness.com, website the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text, therefore the public are more likely to use these platforms rather the text based platforms such as Whatsapp and/or Facebook which the brain processes much slower. This research is done on Instagram and Pinterest because of the many similarities it they have and to prove our hypothesis wrong or right.
Literature Review
In the article that be found in addendum A, Article 2 one will see a comparison between Pinterest and Instagram, it being referred to Pinterest Perfection and Imaginative Instagram. Melanie Duncan is the main focus of the Pinterest part of this article. Melanie Duncan has turned having social media on Pinterest into a business. The repining aspect of the Pinterest allows for more exposure of her work thus creating more income. She also demonstrates how social media is not only used for fun and games; it is also used for promoting, and growing a business. Paul Salmas has used his Instagram account as a platform to showcase his photographs and motivational messages. He has gained a great number of followers in a short space of time he can then carry on with what he is using his Instagram account is for or he can use to generate income and start a business. Perfect Pinterest has been called this because Pinterest is all about DIY and making things perfect. One may take this a weakness because perfection is somewhat of a controversial topic but Pinterest found a way to take it and make a profit out of it. Instagram on the other hand is referred to as Imaginative Instagram because it is all about pictures and photography. Creativity might be a restriction for its popularity but certainly won’t stop the amount of people of Instagram.
Instagram has 400 million monthly active users as of June 2016 whilst Pinterest 150 million monthly active users as of June 2016.
Personally from reading this article I would prefer Instagram because I am passionate about photography and it would be interesting to see how people from different ends of the earth react to it. The likes you get are exhilarating and boost yourself esteem. Although Pinterest has link to websites and pins, Instagram has a direct link to websites and you have the pleasure of making it private Instagram will transcend through time. The data that consumed by Instagram is insanely high and costly which is one of the downfalls Instagram has but it has solution to that because it has people addicted, a good business opportunity and/or strength.
I enjoy using Instagram as I get to share my photography and can be easily complimented, and sadly, easily criticised. With Pinterest I can post pictures, if I want to, and look for images that inspire me to become a better photography or search things, on Pinterest, that will give my advice on what to look for when taking pictures. This makes it really helpful, for whatever career path. Pinterest is simply amazing. It is for anyone who wants to save imagery now, and view it later, this means that even if you format your phone, your account is still safe, and so are all the other imagery you have pinned.
When pinning imagery, you have the ability to categorise the images into different folders, which you name. This makes it easier, for the user, to find what they are looking for, faster.
Research Methodology
Google Forms is what we used to gather our data, we sent the survey out to the OWLAG community and received a detailed graph which will be displayed under the Data Analysis part of this Research Task. These were the following questions that were asked:

As we, Langa and Angel, were going through the survey results we realised that the age of the user determines whether the use of the application is appropriate or not.
It is not the only factor that determines the appropriateness of the use, of the application, by a specific user, however it is a great factor to determine, either the number of people who view your page, the number people who pin your images, the number of people who follow and/or direct message you. Hence, many OWLAG students who selected Instagram as their application of use, by choice and can afford to use the application. However, there are a few who are not willing to use their hard-earned money for the use of data. In that case, they use Pinterest. This is because it can be easily accessed, by the students, on their
laptops.
Recommendations
Instagram:
× It is increasing in popularity thus providing a larger audience
× Large part of the audience users access their accounts on a day-to-day basis
× Attracts a diverse range of users
× It is very costly and takes the most amounts of data then most social networks.
× Advertising is expensive, which confines its use to fairly big brands alone from a business perspective.
Pinterest:
× Users can save images that they are never forgotten
× Links drive traffic to your website
× The repining feature makes the audience to your site or product ever so expanding
× User base is mainly of young female which lowers your target market
× It is time consuming
Instagram can we improved in terms of data intake and memorable information whereas Pinterest can improved in terms broadening their target audience in order for business to consider advertising there.
What we could improve on our research in terms future tasks is to interview people in order to get in depth answers to further our research.
Limitations
Conclusion
Pinterest and Instagram are amazing applications, they have brought closer to the fourth industrial revolution and are ever growing and expanding. These social media’s have changed people’s reasons for being on social media because we have platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest for advertising and making a profit. Social media not just for fun and games and to the OWLAG community social media is about which one would make more sense thus the results being equal. Pinterest and Instagram are both interactive social media’s.
