Virtual Pin Boarding

Pinterest is a social bookmarking web site that was developed in 2008. The free mobile application became available in 2011 and brought in an unexpectedly large amount of downloads. Pinterest has managed to gain more than 27 million active users as of July 2012 (Vivo, 2013) and has jumped in the past year to 54 million users. (Hempel, 2013) This web and mobile application appeals mostly to the female demographic, unlike other applications such as, Facebook or Instagram that don’t have such a defined user. The reason for this is that the majority of content available is geared toward women. The platform offers many hair and beauty tips. There are sections for males such as automotive, but there is not nearly as much information for men as there is for the women. This paper’s purpose is to describe Pinterest and provide a brief discussion about the use, changes, and future uses of this web and mobile application.
The Pinterest platform is set up to resemble a real life pin board that can be used to share media content with other people. The website allows each user to have his or her own virtual pin board that they can use to upload, sort, and manage pins. The pins are any media content such as images, videos, etc. that a user places on their pin board. The user is able to take the pins that they post on their pin board and put them into categories, such as food, travel, & photography to keep their board organized. Users have the ability to be followed and to follow other users pin boards, and if they like what they see, ‘repin’ or copy the content to their own pin board. Most of the content located on Pinterest is just one repinned item that has circulated throughout the entire platform and reached many users.

As someone who would be considered to be ‘old school’ by the members of today’s “Digital Age”, I have assimilated / adapted and learned how to take full advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to me. Nowadays, thanks to social media, anyone who has the desire, can have a voice. Social media has become an integral part of our everyday lives. We find and share our new favorite clothing and food brands on blogs; we meet people with similar interests on Facebook; we get our news in one sentence on Twitter; we share a picture of that fabulous crawfish etoufee we had at a restaurant while visiting New Orleans during our vacation on Instagram; and we can even find our future husband or wife on dating sites. We have an amazing ability to be connected, stay in-the-know and share our own interests, ideas and opinions on just about everything.…

According to a small business article by Christopher Rinaldi, “Pinterest’s popularity and direct linkage to existing sites makes it a must-have for marketers this year.” The article goes on to say that 80% of pins are repins, which means that pins are highly likely to be shared by others, making pinterest a vital tool for marketers. “As photos continue to generate higher engagement rates than text-based content, marketers will develop more branded images for social media platforms in 2014.” (Rinaldi)…

Both marketers and consumers can easily create platforms to interact with each other. Online communities promote consumer-brand relationships with current and potential community members (Lee et al., 2011). In 2007, Facebook launched the Fan Page feature on their social network. The Fan Page allows companies to post messages including photos, anecdotes, videos, and other material. Besides, consumers are enabled to communicate with the company and online peers by commenting, liking, and sharing (de Vries et al., 2012). Subsequently, Foursquare, LinkedIn, Google+ and Twitter followed Facebook’s example of creating company pages (Wikipedia). Popular brands like Coca-Cola and Disney attained a number of fans close to 60 and 40 million respectively (Facebook.com).…
