Pit Bulls – Dangerous and Vicious? Every year, more than 2,000 children in the U.S. are killed by their parents or guardians either through abuse or neglect. A child is more than 800 times more likely to be killed by their adult caretaker than by a Pit Bull (The Real Pit Bull, 2010). Pit Bulls are always portrayed as mean, dangerous, aggressive, vicious, etc. but the dog’s behavior towards people all depends on the owner and how it’s trained. On July 16, 2014 in Syracuse, New York a child and an older man were attacked by a Pit Bull and taken to the hospital. Elizabeth Whitehead, mother of the dog’s owner, was taking care of Chaos, the Pit Bull, while her son was in jail. Elizabeth had told Larry, her ex-husband, to take Chaos outside when two boys walked by and started screaming and kicking at the dog. Then Chaos began to get aggressive and bit Larry in the arm knocking him into a nearby car. Chaos did not let go of Larry’s arm until Elizabeth threw water at Chaos and jumped on top of him to get him to let go of Larry’s arm. Elizabeth told the two kids to hide behind a car. At some point, one of the boys was bitten. Throughout the whole incident, Chaos was on a leash and remained on the leash when animal control removed him. Chaos was never taken off the leash. Neighbors reported that the dog was not on a leash and ran down the street and chased one of them. Elizabeth reported that whatever the neighbors reported wasn’t true because she did put Chaos on a leash. The two who were wounded were transferred to a nearby hospital by ambulance (Pucci, 2014). This little boy and older man were attacked because of the fact that the little boys provoked the dog, screaming at Chaos as well as kicking him. This Pit Bull was only trying to defend itself and does not deserve to be punished. Unfortunately, its reasons like this that make Pit Bulls seem mean, aggressive or vicious. This Pit Bull, Chaos, was provoked. There are many

Unfortunately in today's society there have been many cases of over breeding for this dog which has created temperament problems in their bloodlines, leading to inconsistent behavior. Pit Bulls over bred today are usually used to fight illegally in run down urban areas or are kept outside and are used to guard junkyards, people's houses or private property. The over breeding of these dogs led to people housing them that were not qualified to handle this breed. Though they do not get overly large they have a body mass that can weigh up to 90 pounds, and a lockjaw with 800 pounds of pressure. These dogs are very smart, but require a lot of care and attention. The Pit Bull will also learn to imitate the behavior of its owner. People who neglect these dogs or use aggressive force to train them will often have an aggressive dog likely to turn and attack. When kept in safe living conditions and trained properly these dogs are excellent family pets with a natural guard dog instinct to protect its…

Despite this common opinion, an experiment was once performed. Fifty Pit Bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Forty nine of the fifty dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, extensive, and carefully carried out. Pit Bulls are different from other dogs and potential owners need to be made aware of the facts before considering rescuing or purchasing one. For example, a dog lover who has had Bichons all her life will be sorely surprised unless she does her homework and understand the bully breeds. Pits need a lot of structure, a very pronounced human alpha, training, exercise and lots of attention. The owner needs consistency, time, energy and quite possibly some…

The reputation of the Pit Bull has taken a dramatic downfall in the past few decades due to negative publicity. Originally, Pit Bulls were considered to be “American darlings”; during WWI they were claimed to be the sweetest and most loving dogs a person could own, but in the 1980’s the view of the “American darlings” changed due to an illegal “sport”, dogfighting. Although dogfighting is illegal in all fifty states, inhumane persons who participate in the sport choose pit bulls because of their strong physique and loyal personality, which contribute…

One popular saying that most people know is “If you throw a dog a bone, expect him to bite.” With so many dog bites and attacks each year, it is easy to blame the dog. Pit bull attacks are the leading dog attacks in the United States. Although pit bulls can be very loving and friendly dogs, most people often perceive them to be vicious killers. This judgement is unfair because people do not understand why they bite. The general public needs to be better educated about pit bulls, such as why they have a bad reputation, what we can do to fix their reputation, and why they are great dogs to have as family pets.…

Other pit bulls were specifically bred for work and companionship. These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty and even those pit bulls bred to fight other animals were not prone to aggressiveness toward people. Dogs used for fighting needed to be routinely handled by people; therefore aggression toward people was not tolerated. Any dog that behaved aggressively toward a person was killed, to avoid passing on such an undesirable trait. Research on pet dogs confirms that dog aggressive dogs are no more likely to direct aggression toward people than dogs that aren’t aggressive to other dogs. All of these negative traits can also be easily avoided…

It is understood that most people have come in contact with a pit bull at some point in their lifetime and, in some cases, they were positive experiences. Many people argue that the pit bulls in which they have met were always very sweet dogs. This may be true, however, pit bulls have displayed their ability to viciously snap without warning. Warning signs were culled out of their genes to make them the most effective at fighting other dogs. Pit bull owners who had witnessed their beloved pet lash out in violent ways often say the dog had no history of violence and the attack seemed completely out of the blue. A man by the name of Randall Lockwood who is an expert in dog behavior says the fighting dogs lie. "Fighting dogs lie all the time. I experienced it first hand when I was investigating…

Once adopted, it’s never a bad idea to bring a dog old or young to a dog training academy for a couple dollars. No one said owning a dog would be cheap so it’s on the owner to make sure it has all the basic training and necessities it needs. However, states and cities believe that while yes the history of the dog does play a factor in bites and injuries, it is on the owner to care and train the canine not to. The concept is basic and BSL doesn’t remember that pitbull dogs especially originated as hunters and were bred within a dog fighting environment so wired into their brain could be the idea of aggression but in today’s world there are a variety resources that many owners have to make sure the dogs are perfectly behaved but just never take advantage of it, leading to behavioral problems that may cause an actual injury to occur. The National Library of Medicine even briefly states in their article “Will breed-specific legislation reduce dog bites?” that “biting is natural” and that “Owners need to be encouraged to actively work at inhibiting biting behaviour when dogs are young.” This goes back onto the solution from the children and even now with strangers, it is the duty of the owners to give the dog proper training and considering the history of the dog…
