Planned Parenthood does provide women with the opportunity to have an abortion, they are allowing the women to have a safe operation with trained professionals, this is a considerably safer option than the alternatives.
The powerful movement of feminism is linked with the pro-choice movement and voices of thousands of women are being heard across the nation demanding for the right to make their own decisions. One of the most popular events that was related to the women’s empowerment movement was the Women’s March on Washington. The march represented a positive confirmation of women’s rights as human’s rights and celebrated millions of women, immigrants, and others who had been disrespected, demonized, and threatened throughout the process of the recent election. At the most fundamental level, abortion, the right to have one or not, is a reflection of the female role in society. Conflict perspective, which analyzes the power relations between men and women, illustrates how women are still not viewed as equal in our society. The governmental regulations of abortion, how, where, and when they can be performed, is another expression of how women’s roles are minimized in society. The fact that the government is involved in the personal choices women make regarding their own health and bodies is indicative of women’s lack of agency. Even with the advent of the introduction of equal rights our society is still patriarchal and predominately white. And when viewed through this lenses, bias is inevitable. Gender differences are a reflection of suppression of one group (women) by another group (men). …show more content…
(5) Thanks to Roe V.
Wade, I have never lived in a time when abortion was not a legal option. The supreme court ruling allows young women like me to terminate a pregnancy for any reason. although I have never been put in a position in which I would be required to make this kind of decision, the fact that I have the fundamental right is something that I value. Abortion is always going to be a highly divisive issue, largely due to religion and morals, but I firmly believe that a women’s right to privacy is essential. I am concerned with governmental changes that have been made in the past few decades, that are chipping away that fundamental right. Currently, some states required parental consent for minors to obtain an abortion. Parental consent can be an especially sensitive issue for pregnant teenagers coming from abused homes, as these young women may not have positive parental influences. It is my personal belief that until the fetus is viable outside of the womb, it is not a human being. However, I also believe that abortion should not be used as a form of birth control, and measures should be taken to not get pregnant. But, if a woman is choosing to terminate her pregnancy she should have the right to do so. I believe that a woman should be able to have an abortion at any time in her life, just because a teenage mother chooses to have a baby at seventeen, does not mean that she should not be able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy when she is thirty-five. I do have a
problem with the concept of “designer babies”, and terminating a pregnancy based on gender preferences is distasteful to me. However, a women’s right to choose has to be all encompassing, so while I find the idea of “designer babies” wrong I support another woman’s right to choose. Upon reflection, America’s varied and sometimes volatile opinions on the issue of abortion as well as a women’s right to make choices regarding her own health have widely varied. As a society, we have come a long way from our uncontested beginnings regarding the choice of childbirth. Along the way, religion and moral issues have influenced our cultural outlook about abortion and whether we classify it as a deviance act or not. Ultimately in 1973, we decided that a woman’s right to privacy and personal choice overrode all else. With today’s administration, and an increasing trend towards conservative outlook, the pendulum may start to swing back towards conservative and religious mores. As a result, the legal right to an abortion is at risk.
