Poem Review: Washed Away By David Aziz
“Washed Away” by David Aziz, 12BD.

When you are drowning, you do not inhale any of the water until you pass out, and even then, the instinct to not let any water in is so strong that you feel like your head is exploding. Does not matter how strong you are, water eventually washes everything away, the good and the bad. Keep that in mind.

As the buzzer sounds, the game begins, and I go in for the tip-off. I seize the ball, with the realization that the game has just begun and I must act. I spot an opening and take it. I jump, trying to score, but my legs are taken out from under me, and I hit the floor. I hear a pop, and in an instant, I lose everything that made me who I am. I lost my play.

Later, I got a phone call from my dad. The news hit me like a truck. I had one of the most dreadful injuries a basketball player can have. I ended the call with tears in my eyes, trying to make sense of it all. I could not catch my breath, I was getting dizzy, my feet

Basketball, painting, chess- it is all therapy. Stress is water in a bucket; too much, and you drown. These hobbies, however, function as a release for the water to empty that bucket. Losing that relief makes life infinitely harder. It affects grades, relationships, and even life. Now you may think that you should give up your play because of the time-consuming essence that is school, especially in Year 12, however, what I have come to realize is that giving up play is a fatal flaw that many succumb to. Play is more than a diversion from academic pursuits. It shapes character and commitment. Hold on to what makes you happy with everything you have. It plays a fundamental part in living a fulfilled life. I know I can say all of this and you may walk right out of here with ignorance, but please if you are going to remember something just remember these 3 words. Don’t give up on the idea. Don’t give up your play! Ever. I will be

The relationship between play and learning seems obvious to many child professionals and parents, and yet there are still lack of understanding surrounding the importance of children's play. Some people believe that children need to "work" not play, and that playing serves no useful purpose in a learning and development environment. This is surprising considering that play, with its high levels of motivation and potential enjoyment empowers children (as well as people of all ages) as follows:…

Play is important for Children because it practices their linguistic, cognitive and social skills and contributes to their general personality development. Children use their minds while playing, because they are thinking and acting as if they were another person. When they make such a transformation, they are taking a step forward abstract thinking in that they are freeing their thoughts from a focus on concrete objects. Play is also associated with creativity, especially the ability to be less literal and more flexible in one's thinking.…

It was a Saturday and we were playing Van Wert in a regular season basketball game and it was close. It was a Junior varsity game. We were only playing two quarters due to the lack of numbers. The game didn’t count for much but we were giving it our all. Van Wert wasn’t a favorite of ours and we were doing just about anything just to win. The game was intense. The coaches were yelling. The crowd was cheering. The gym exploded with sound coming from all directions. We were equally matched. We trailed for most of the game but we were always very close. As the game was winding down, we were trailing by just a few points. We had the ball. The ball was stolen and we were all sprinting down the court to stop it. I got a hand on the ball from behind…

During the 3rd quarter, I was running down field on a kickoff. Approaching the first blocker, I tried to go around him, and he drove his helmet straight into my knees. All I remember is having thoughts of relief as my knee exploded in pain. I enjoyed the idea of no longer playing football, but not the physical pain. Football season passed by in what seemed like a week because I was sitting at home everyday instead of practicing. My grades were rising, my happiness and excitement were both coming back to a healthy state as basketball approached.…

There was a general interest meeting for anyone who wanted to play on the school team. I was confident I could return to my geeky ways if there were no other beginners on the team. As I nervously walked into the gym, it seemed like every kid on the court was born with a basketball in his hand. I stood on the sideline and tried to look somewhat coordinated by bouncing an occasional dribble. I watched in awe as kids came up the court and effortlessly hit shot after shot. They could drive to the hoop with ease and made me feel like I was born with two left feet with their fancy dribble moves. The coach walked out of his office and announced to the group that basketball tryouts would be in November. It was already September, and it would take a miracle worker to bring me to the skill level I needed to make the team. I was short and had never touched a basketball in my life. What was I doing here? The mountain I anticipated was in reality Mt. Everest. I could never see myself in a million years having what it takes to be good at basketball. But I kept hearing soft whispers inside my mind to just try it. Maybe it was because it was a new school year and a new beginning. Maybe it was because I had friends who lived and breathed basketball. Whatever the reason, I signed up for…

" My coach had said and I started to cry silently only gasping for air when I absolutely needed it. Rather slowly I was helped up and onto my left foot, where they had intended on me hopping back to the sidelines, but the extra movement hurt worst as my leg moved when I hopped. I could feel myself crying still, my nose running and face hot. Ahead of us I could see Sunshine running ahead to get a chair and two of the dads to help carry me off the…

He went to pass, and I took a couple steps to stop that pass. I then saw that he looked on the far side of the court, and I dashed to the other side to intercept the ball. I got there with exceptional timing, I soared in the air to steal the ball, yet as I came through, collecting the ball, number 23 for Knox pulled my arm back to prevent me from landing safely. The bottom half of me got caught under my back. I knew straight away that I had injured my knee. Originally I thought it was just a jar, and I got up and hobbled five metres. I then collapsed, knowing that I’ve done more than just a jar. My coaches helped me off the court and applied ice straight away, trying to get back to the last minute of the game. We ended up winning by a point! I had an adrenaline rush and was able to walk over to shake the players and refs hands. After the team talk, and many people asking how I was, we were ready to go to the car. As I was talking to Vike, heading towards the car, my knee buckled under me and I collapsed on the concrete screaming with pain. I took deep breaths while dad went to the car, and brought it closer to me. I hopped in and went to drop off Michael and Vike. We then continued home and I went straight to my bedroom and sat on my bed…

The entire crowd was absolutely silent. The eyes of every spectator were fastened on me as I looked towards the ground in shame. Why did I take the shot? Why didn’t I just pass the ball and let someone else feel this regret? Why, was the only question I kept wanting myself to answer, but was also the question I kept trying to forget. I could hear my fellow teammates talking like I were a hologram not good enough to even exist in their presence. I awaited my coach to release all the anger he had felt during my biggest mistake. Then, finally after what felt like an eternity, coach walked in. He had the same shame that I felt, the shame of defeat.…

Ever since I could walk, basketball was my life. I played it all year round and enjoyed every second. I played on an elite, national AAU basketball team and received a couple collegiate offers. So finally when it came time for varsity basketball, I was ready to play at that next level. When tryouts rolled around, it was all I could think of. Basketball consumed my thoughts. On the last day of tryouts, when I got called into a little white room for a one-on-one talk with my new head coach, all I could think about is what position I will be playing throughout the season. But when my basketball coach said, “You didn’t make this year’s girls basketball team,” I was in disbelief. He later stung me with the statement, “I thought you would be crying more,” which is when my emotions and thoughts changed. At first, my friends and family supported me as I faced a setback in my life. But then, as time went on, society went back to their daily routine, unaware of the thoughts going through my head. This experience changed me and how I look at every situation. It inspired me to think differently when adversity hits. Eventually, I tried new things like indoor lacrosse, skiing, became an officer in DECA, and continued to play AAU and intramural basketball. I trusted my Christian faith and realized He does have a plan and purpose for every individual. From November 19, 2012, I had two choices: to move on or dwell on the situation. I choose to change my thoughts and my perspective and plan for the future.…
