Police fatigue also could lead to the illegal amounts of police force usage. Police use of force according to the text book can be easily defined as the amount of physical force used by an officer when dealing with a member of the public (Schmalleger, 2017). If an officer is fatigued, then the officer can no longer use the proper amount of physical force and also will make improper decisions on whether or not police force is even needed to resolve a particular situation thus they may result to deadly force. To prevent the illegal use of police force, police have been doing a number of things. They are posting their manuals online, enforcing policies on police fatigue, and reinforcing the guidelines that police are supposed to abide by. Many officers work to their own discretion even though their departments have certain guideline they may be required to follow. If officers abide by these guidelines it will allow officers to work the required number of hours by the departments standard while being able to have sufficient off time in order to avoid police fatigue. There are more people facing mental illness as well as more people out lashing and showing to have violent behaviors. The departments need to invest more time and money into police to give them a chance to react to a situation in a fashion they will feel comfortable in and not assuming they have to use deadly or brutal force. They need to take steps to make sure every so often that officers are able to handle the requirements of the job as well as make sure they implement drug testing and have a handle on the corruption in the department. They need to make officers accountable for their actions and not let them get off sky free when they have committed a crime. Offices also need to have in place a system that should be used which would result in less lethal weapons to give someone a fighting chance if they are aggressive. You never know what drug someone maybe on or if they may face a mental challenge and are not able to let you know. More officers also need to be involved in the community so we can all come to an agreement on what should be done listen to the community and involve them on the implementation to solve the issues and challenges police face today patrolling the streets to protect and service their country.
