Abstract Vellore is the second most populous district of Tamil Nadu in India where the Palar River flowing towards east for about 295 Km. The river sets as the major water source recharging the ground water nearby areas. The District is now known for its medical tourism and educational excellence. With more migration into the city, it becomes necessary for the corporation to give a good quality drinking water to the people. Vellore is surrounded by many leather tanneries and small scale dying industries and their effluents are discharged into the Palar River causing impact on the quality of the underground water. Hence, it becomes necessary to study the quality of the groundwater of the city as it greatly influenced by the Palar River. Sampling stations were chosen near residential areas, located at a distance of 2-3 Km from the Palar River. The physico-chemical parameters like pH, temperature, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, chloride, hardness and salinity of the samples collected from various sampling stations were studied. The determined physico-chemical parameters were compared with the BIS and ICMR standards for the drinking water to know about the quality of the groundwater. Various physico-chemical parameters studied in the area between Shenbakkam and Keezhminnal of Vellore, show the quality of the underground water in

West Bengal, a state in Eastern India is very rich in groundwater and more than 80 percent of its populations tap this source as drinking water. In West Bengal, and in the neighboring nation of Bangladesh, a health crisis of devastating proportions has been quietly unfolding over many years. Much of the groundwater underlying the Upper Deltaic plain between the Bhagirathi River in West Bengal and the Padma River in Bangaladesh has been contaminated by arsenic concentrations exceeding the permissible limit of 0.05 mg/L arsenic concentrations most often ranged from 0.09 to 3.2 mg/L.…

“I never drink water; that is the stuff that rusts pipes”, W.C. Fields. Now this quote may seem funny now, but the fact that many people are afraid to drink water due to fears of getting sick is no laughing matter. It’s important for individuals to be aware of what they are putting in their bodies and educate themselves on water quality, especially in their area. One factor in particular that seems to have a drastic effect on water quality is the increase of urbanization in areas surrounded by water. This paper will explore the effects of expanding urbanization on drinking water quality. Some background information will also be provided, as well as current work being done to improve drinking water quality and future endeavors.…

Every being relies and require water in order to survive. The earth is composed of more than 70% water; most of it is not usable water. The increase of population has increased the demand for crops and livestock from the agricultural industry, which resulted in the increase of contamination within the waterways. In this lab, we will explore water quality and contamination. The USGS has conducted water quality test and provided water managers and policymakers with technically sound and unbiased data and reports for more than 100 years. The objective is to minimize contamination of drinking water, bodies of water and also fruits and vegetables. To do this there needs to be heavy monitoring and managing certain practices such as the agricultural industry. The USGS measures ground water on regular bases to detect changes that may be produced by short and long term changes in precipitation, droughts and…

In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater were investigated. First, I will observe the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the largest quality of contamination to the water, while the laundry detergent will just create a bad smell to it. Considering the smells and thickness to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with little or no contamination in it. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

Of the United States population, over 50% depend on groundwater for drinking water and so do other living organisms. We use groundwater to bathe, to cook food with, and to drink with. But, when groundwater contamination occurs which is when man-made products such as road salts, chemicals, gasoline and oil get into the groundwater, it causes the water to become unsafe and unfit for living organisms use. If the groundwater becomes contaminated, it has some serious health effects such as diseases like hepatitis and dysentery which is caused by contamination from septic tank waste. Poisoning can also be caused by toxins leached into well water supplies and other long term effects such as certain types of cancer can occur as well.…

Experiments were done on the water quality and the contamination of groundwater. First, I observed the effects that different pollutants had on groundwater. I predicted that the experiments with the oil and vinegar would create the most contaminations to the water. When the laundry detergent were mixed with the groundwater, it created a light green color with a pleasant smell. The second water treatment experiment were about filtering techniques to remove contaminants from water. I predicted to drain the water by removing all the contaminants by using a funnel to purify the water. The last experiment were performed using Dasani, and Fiji bottled water and Tap water to determine the quality of drinking water. I also predicted that tap water would leave the least amount of contaminants and the Fiji bottled water would have the most contaminants.…

Water pollution has become a large global issue, especially in developing countries where it is a struggle to find clean drinking water for the inhabitants of the region. There are currently seven different types of water pollution; sewage, disease causing agents, sediment pollution, inorganic plant and algal, organic compounds, radioactive substances, and thermal pollution. These seven types can be categorized into three main types; biological, chemical, and physical. This paper will discuss chemical pollution in main water systems.…

Groundwater is an important source of drinking water for more than half of the nation's population and nearly all its rural population. In recent years, widespread reports of bacteria, nitrate, synthetic organic chemicals and other pollutants in groundwater have increased public concern about the quality of groundwater. What do we know - and what don't we know - about groundwater quality? What causes groundwater contamination, and to what extent are the nation's groundwater supplies at risk?…
