Pollution is one of biggest concern in the environmental issues because it covers all which are water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. Pollution is contaminants that can cause an adverse change s to environment and human health. Pollutants is components of pollution where it can be foreign substances or it just naturally contaminants. Pollution can be classified into two types which are point source and nonpoint source pollution. Pollution can be chemical substances or energy like noise and heat.
Pollution has become popular after World War II because emissions of the radioactive from the atomic warfare and testing. After that in 1952 in London, The Great Smog which is non-nuclear event occurs and it killed at least 4000 people. These two events become the starter point for first major modern environmental legislation, Clean Air Act of 1956. Between mid-1950s and early 1970s in United State had begun to draw a major public attention regarding the environmental issues. It happen when the Congress passed the Noise Control Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
Several pollution accidents that occur helped in increasing the consciousness among public about the risk of pollution. In 1974, the dumping of PCB in Hudson River has cause the ban of consuming the fish from that river by EPA. In 1978, the long term contamination of dioxin in Love Canal since 1947 has become the major news and led to Superfund legislation in 1980.
