At some point in life everyone comes to a realisation that the world is not the way they pictured it. Ponyboy was living life in a haze. Nothing was real to him, he did not have a care in the world. He had no idea that he was putting himself in danger. He was to caught up in the movie he had just seen “I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” Ponyboy was starting to wake up to the world when he nearly dies, and then has to run, from the cops and the socs. “I couldn't use this I said dropping the pop bottle, I couldn’t ever cut anyone.” Ponyboy loses his innocence when his life takes a turn for the worst.
