Introduction
For my personal project, I have decided to write an essay to shed the light on the topic of technology by making a painting. I chose the project of making a painting …show more content…
because I feel like it is the best way to express myself and because it is like I am reuniting pieces of the puzzle of thoughts, feelings and memories. The inspiration for my personal project came from my realization of the change between our world and the world hundreds of years ago in which I have experienced. I hoped to learn from this project more about surrealism, photography and the artists’ lives.
It was really challenging for me to achieve my goal and send my message and I did it through the process of organizing a plan, writing questions to interview artists, producing and performing a video, designing the painting, making a painting and presenting ideas. But before starting anything I made a list of the steps I should follow: 1- Making a mind map 2- Starting to collect ideas for my topic 3- Organize how to do the painting (theme, style, idea…) 4- Interview artists to get more ideas 5- Make a painting 6- Produce a video 7- Double check the essay, painting and video 8- Submit essay 9- Present personal project 10- If possible, put the painting on the internet

I intend to achieve my plan by following the steps carefully and working on time. In order to achieve my plan I had to answer essential questions such as:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of technology?
How can I portray the topic of technology through a painting?
How can I include photography in my painting?
My area of interaction focus was the human ingenuity for the reason that my project is about how technology changed, developed and how it changed the way we think and this area of interaction shows how humans develop in many different areas which is in my case art.
Description of the process
1- Making a mind map
Because: since there is a deadline, it is time managing and to show you where you are, where you are going, and what you need to do.
Date: February 2- Starting to collect ideas for my topic
Because: to make my personal project rich with information.
Date: February 3- Organize how to do the painting (theme, style, idea…)
Because: to get my idea straight
Date: February/ March 4- Interview artists to get more ideas
Because: to get more information from artists who have experience
Date: April

5- Make a painting
Because: to express the topic through an artistic way
Date: May 6- Produce a video
Because: to show the interviews and because people like watching the steps through a creative way.
Date: April May 7- Double check the essay, painting and video
Because: to make sure that everything is right
Date: end of May 8- Submit essay
Because: because of the deadline
Date: end of May 9- Present personal project
Because: to inform the people about my personal project and for people to know the message behind.
Date: June 13 10- If possible, upload the painting on the internet
Because: to inform more people about the message.
The best way to show my work is through making my painting in a futuristic way and in a unique way to show how technology changed our lives. My product was a painting; neverthelessI could have expressed my idea through: photography, web designing, sculpture, play…I started with the idea of technology but the idea wasn’t clear in that time. Then, in the middle of the project I have been through a lot of pressure and changed my idea to the war in Syria because I was being told that my idea was not clear. At the end, I got my idea straight and chose technology. Although, I needed information for my personal project, I did use knowledge I already had about art and technology which helped me through the beginning of the personal project with the mind map…

My knowledge also helped me with the painting part, within 3 years of experience with oil paint, I was ready to paint. But I did learn new art styles such as pointillism and photography. I received most of this information through my mentor Miss Sarah khayat in which I am much honored to work with. The materials that I used for my project were oil paint, a painting and 2 cameras. The technique attracting the success of achieving my goal used was the SMARTER technique. The SMARTER technique stands for: S specificM measurableA attainableR relevantT timelyE evaluateR reevaluate. This technique helped me a lot but to be honest I did not achieve the T part correctly.
Analysis Analysis of research The decisions I have made in planning and creating my product to achieve my goal were affected by the research I have done such as, when I researched about all the painting styles I was determined to paint 4 styles of paint but then I changed to Surrealism.
The 4 styles of paint that I wanted to use for my painting were Surrealism, Cubism, Pop art and Pointillism. Surrealism is generally based on dreams. Cubism is modern art and it is based on geometric shapes. Pop art is short for popular art; it is inspired by comic strips, advertising and popular entertainment. Pointillism is based on small dots of paint to make up a picture. I did this research to have a better idea on art and know what style I am going to use in my painting. From this research I learned about all the styles and I researched more about the styles that interested …show more content…
me.

Most of my research was about technology since my goal was to inform people about that subject. I did gain a lot of important and interesting information, especially new inventions. Yet, I did not choose technology because I wanted too, but because I had a few choices and this subject suited me the most. I knew that technology suited me the most but it was hard to remember why I chose it. Places far away have come closer, thanks to technology. Communication is quick, thanks to technology. Travel is fast, thanks to technology. I mean, how would our basic needs be reached so easily if not for technology?
Analysis of process and outcomes
Through this paragraph the first idea I am going to inform the reader about is my goal. So, my goal is to enlighten people about the changes of technology in the world as well as in the way we think. I wanted my voice to be heard, people really should be thankful to what they have and stop complaining. The second idea is how I achieved my goal. The primary step was to show the advantages of technology through painting. The next step was to produce a video that enable the audience to know the process through the personal project and be aware of the goal.
In this paragraph, I will discuss the subject of the inspiration for my goal. Like I provided in the introduction, the inspiration came from my realization of two different worlds. This goes back to when I was in scout and had a camp trip; there was no water, no electricity, nothing. When I came back after 3 days of camp, I realized the change; I realized that we should be thankful to what we have instead of nagging. So from this moment on, this was my goal, to inform people on how the world changed, specifically how technology changed our lives.

Over the years, we have seen technology develop as if it is a child growing or a car. It started as a baby crying, demanding for development were it was just a car made out of wood. Then when the baby became middle aged the car became made out of metal, now some cars are even touch. Who knows, maybe when this child grows old all cars are going to be able to fly. We treat technology as if it is our best friend or a member of our family because we just cannot live without it today just like we cannot live without our sisters or parents.
Unfortunately, technology does disappoint us sometimes. What I mean by that is that just like technology had advantages it also had disadvantages. Technology makes life more complex, with the fact that everything is easier and faster today comes responsibility too. What I mean by that is that people need to constantly update themselves with information about technology. What we are experiencing is that we as humans who build civilization are now destroying it with our foolishness. This is also causing environmental problems such as pollution in air, water... another disadvantage that technology led us to is war for example because of petrol, weapons…. However, technology makes us happy more than disappointing us sometimes.

My planning stage was both successful and unsuccessful. When I first started planning, everything was good but the only thing I needed most was to interview people. That was the unsuccessful part.Inthe beginning of May I met a photographer named Usra el Madhoun, I found out about her through Facebook and my mentor. The thing I liked the most about her is that she uses photography as if it was her diary because all of her work portrayed are either good or bad moments in her life. At the end of May which is the last month for the personal project I met with a few artists and it was helpful. My research stage was successful though, even if it took me a lot of time to research at least one idea the research part went great. Though, my product was not as successful as I thought it would be. The painting, the creation and the idea were really great but the problem is that I should have started the painting before the month of May that way I would have had more time to do it, luckily I finished it in time.
Evaluation of product
Before starting doing my product, I had to get my idea straight which took few months.
I began to draw my ideas in my personal project copybook in which I drew a lot of ideas. I started out with a body and all sorts of inventions coming out of him then I did the same thing but I added a brain to the body. After that the next idea was a small box named technology with inventions coming out of it. After drawing all these ideas in my copybook I drew on cardboard, the first one was a world and as usual inventions coming out of it and the final cardboard was half a world and half a brain with inventions coming out of it. After that last cardboard I was determined that I was going to paint it.So I started painting it with a little help of my friends and voila I had my product! If I could do this project again I would not change anything because I believe that what I did is
enough.

Conclusion
In this part of the essay I am going to conclude everything as if it is a diary:
When I paint I am not Chafic that everybody is familiar with, I am another totally different confident person. When I first started with the personal project I faced a lot of emotional problems. I felt trapped. Not only was I stressed out from the amount of work that I had to do, I also had to challenge myself for the personal project. To be honest, in the beginning of the project, I never thought I could do something like that. Nevertheless, I was able to pull it through and stand up to people and to myself. I had to admit though, my painting turned out to be really surprising and I think that I was the best part of the personal project. To be honest, all my life I was never, ever proud of myself, I always felt as if there are 20,000 mistakes in my works of art. I want to be proud of myself but I just keep thinking that whatever I do is not good enough. Here is an amazing quote that I found by Aristotle: “we are what we repeatedly do excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”

Appendix
Appendix A: Interview
Name: Miss Battina 1- How long have you been in the theme of photography?
I started taking photographs when I was really small, I was 6 but I did not know it was photography back then? I actually started to know it was photography when I was about 16 years old. 2- What initially interested you into photography?
I started photography because I wanted to write a diary and I did not want it to be only written, I wanted to express what I think and the ideas that I imagine through photographs. So, that is what made me a photographer because it is a way to express yourself. 3- Do you consider yourself as a surrealist photographer?
Maybe, in some ideas that I have it is definitely surrealistic but some of them are plane like me sitting with a book. But then I feel like I need to express how something I out of this world, I go surreal. 4- Which photographers do you look up to most?
His name is Tim Walker and there is another Turkish photographer I guess her name is Anka, and her family is very sophisticated I can’t remember it. She is a photographer but what I like more about her is she uses photography as if it is her diary like what I do. Tim Walker is more of a fashion photographer. 5- If you could work alongside any photographer who would it be?
Anka.
-9-
6- What would you day is more important good knowledge or good equipment?
Good knowledge definitely, because I started taking photographs with disposing the camera that you get for cheap. So, it is like your knowledge of how you can express yourself. 7- What form of photography do you dislike the most?
I guess straight photography.
8- What goals are you working towards within photography? When will you know you have reached it?
Actually, my goal is to become an artist without changing my beliefs, my idea. I want to express myself, inspire people and not be shaped by the troubles of adulthood. I want to stay as innocent as I was when I was 6 years old holding the camera, that is my goal.
9- How do you characterize the style of your photography?
It is personal, it’s sometimes dreamy, and it’s sometimes dark, when I feel dark. It depends how I feel.
10- Do you specialize in color or black/white photography?
I specialize in color; I rarely use black & white Photography because I never feel black & white. So when I feel happy I express myself with lighter colors. So that’s why I don’t like black & white.
