Poseidon was ruler of the sea. He met a beautiful young girl named Amphrite. Amphrite became Goddess of the sea and they soon married. They then had 8 kids: Thesus, Triton, Polyphemus, Belus, Agenor, Nelus, Atlas, and Marina. Marina was their youngest daughter. Amphrite was worried about her daughter. Amphrite and Poseidon were both very busy and desperate, so Amphrite took it upon herself to ask her evil older sister Alizeh to look after ands protect her and Poseidon's' new born baby. Alizne finally finally came up with a something. She could see that Marina was going to be just was beautiful as her mother, and Alizen was even more jealouse than before, so she decided to make a deal with Amprite “I'll watch after your baby if you will allow me to make her fit in where she belongs.” Amphrite was astounded that Alizen wanted to do something nice for her family, or so she thought. Alizen cast a spell on the girl so that when she turned 16 years old and the time came for her to be married and inherit the kingdom of the sea she would instead turn half fish half human. This would make the girl hideous and most certainly ensuring that she would never get married. Further, she would never be able to leave the sea to find a husband. She was guaranteed to die if ever she attempted to do so.

As time passed Marina, had the powers to control water and was destined to rule the Underwater Kingdom. She became more and more beautiful and life was pretty easy for her. She had no idea about the deal that was made between her Mother and Alizeh. Alizeh did watch after the girl just always from a distance, so Marina never really saw

    Odysseus and Athena

She is constantly around during his journey to both guide and protect him. This is similar to the relationship between God and Job because of the constant care and observation. Even though Athena’s protection is much more direct towards Odysseus, God can also be seen as a sort of protector for Job. Although God allowed Job to endure many harsh things, he was constantly keeping watch over Job. These two relationships are clearly similar due to how Odysseus and Job both worship their gods freely and without hesitation. It also seems relevant to me that in both the Hebrew bible and the story of Odysseus, the main characters are unconsciously compared to their higher beings. I believe in the Hebrew bible it is stated that God created man in his image. In the Odyssey, Athena expresses “No more of this though. Two of a kind, we are, contrivers, both. Of all men now alive you are the best in plots and storytelling. My own fame is for wisdom among the gods- deceptions too.” (Pg 368, ln 350)…

Poseidon was the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. As the protector of all sea creatures, he was considered the worst tempered, temperamental and greedy god, after disputes with the other gods. His brother, Zeus and hades, dominated their father Cronus and the titans together. They all had to draw straws, to divide the world, in which Poseidon drew the seas. The trident, is the weapon of Poseidon, which can cause earthquakes and shatter many objects. With this power weapon, he was considered to have the strongest power, amongst, Zeus and hades. Many People of Greece, worshipped Poseidon, especially seamen. This substantial impact towards the people of Greece, made them drown horses, as sacrifices towards Poseidon. People would also pray and make offerings in the Temple of Poseidon, before setting out to sea, hoping to be protected and be insured safety. With this request, storms would calm down and sea monsters would swim playfully on the surface, rather being vicious.…

Athena’s role as the institutor in The Odyssey is significant because the goddess begins to change Telemachus’s behavior and thoughts very dramatically. She implores Telemachus to mature into an adult and a chain reaction followed. This led Telemachus in search of his long-lost father, and eventually led to Odysseus’s return. To begin this process, Athena set off to Ithaca, disguising herself as Mentes, an old friend of Odysseus. Then she went straight to the prince Telemachus in the palace. After feasting in her guest’s house, Athena advises Telemachus to “not cling to [his] boyhood any longer. It’s time [he was] a man”(Homer 87). Athena wants Telemachus to take some responsibility and put an end to the suitors’ endless game. She wants Telemachus…

    Medusa

Medusa, originally a beautiful young woman whose crowning glory was her magnificent long hair, was desired and courted by many suitors. Medusa was a priestess for the temple of Athena. Because she was a priestess for the virgin god Athena she had to stay a virgin as well and couldn’t take a husband. Yet before she could be betrothed to a husband, Poseidon found her worshipping in the temple of Athena and ravished and raped her. Athena was outraged at her sacred temple being violated but was not mad at Poseidon but instead was mad at Medusa. Because this sort of behavior was expected from Poseidon and Athena was a god herself, she sided with Poseidon. She punished Medusa by turning her beautiful tresses into snakes and giving her the destructive power to turn anyone who looked directly at her into stone. One of the best-known legends about her tells of how the Greek hero Perseus killed her. Once there was a king named Acrisius, he had a beautiful daughter named Danae. The oracle of Apollo told Acrisius that Danae's son would one day kill him. Acrisius could not let that happen, so he locked Danae in a bronze tower so that she would never marry nor have children. The tower had no doors, but it had one very small window. Danae was very sad, but one day a bright shower of gold came through the small window. Having not heard from his daughter in a while, Acrisius decided to check on her to see what she was up too. He walked into the tower and saw Danae with a baby on her lap, smiling her said, "I have named him Perseus." Acrisius was furious; his first reaction was to kill both mother and child but decided against it in fear for the wrath of Zeus so he decided to shut Danae and baby Perseus up in a large chest and cast them out to sea. Somehow they got safely to the island of Seriphos where Polydectes was king. The king wanted to marry Danaë, but Perseus opposed the marriage. Polydectes decided on a plan to get rid of Perseus. Polydectes pretended to be marrying a…

Alymer’s behavior is very manipulative around others. He doesn’t just come out and say how he hates Georgiana’s birthmark, his actions say it for him. He uses his behavior to get what he wants from people. Every time he would look at Georgiana’s face he would shudder a little so it would make her feel uncomfortable with her birthmark, and so then he could try to get rid of it. I do not think that Alymer’s actions were very wise because his stubbornness and pride were the cause of his own wife’s death. His ethics were not morally correct. He was more focused on trying to create perfection (which is not possible) than embracing his wife’s flaws and loving her for her imperfections and who she truly is.…

The theme of destiny is crucial to each work because in the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” the theme reinforces crime and consequence. In The Blind Assassin it enhances the bluntness of reality. Atwood makes this them visible throughout the main novel and sub-novel. From Laura’s birth and the death of their mother it was obvious that Iris was destined to be caretaker of the family. Iris was never allowed into her own individual self from that moment. Atwood addresses the idea of the ability to act on one’s environment separates individual self as an entity linking the internal and external (Domagalska 410). The fact that Iris does not have complete control over her interactions with the world around her she is not entirely linked to the world…
