Power is affected by poverty because there are less opportunities for the less fortunate making life more burdensome. In the article A Look Inside America's Poorest County Nomaan Merchant states,”The few people who have jobs usually have to drive up to 80 miles to tribal headquarters. The nearest major population centers are Rapid City and Bismarck, each a trip of 150 miles or more” (Merchant, 2011). …show more content…
This example supports that financially unstable people’s life are more difficult because they have to drive more than 100 miles to the nearest cities to find work. When wealthy people living in cities only have to drive maybe a few miles to work. Driving that many miles every day and night can become every stressful. According to Ravi Agrawal,”Their argument has often been that they need a larger quota, not a smaller one. They say they have few other routes to social mobility, especially given how disadvantaged they have been for decades on literacy, education, healthcare, and opportunities”(Agrawal, 2016). This supports the claim because they have been outcasts for so long that do not have the skills needed to find jobs. In today’s society it is nearly impossible to find a job that do not require education. There are additional reasons why life is more difficult for the less fortunate other than less opportunities like health conditions.
Poverty does affect power because the health of people living in poverty is worse compared to financially stable people.
According Characterizing Poverty,”In many low-income countries, rapid population growth has contributed to overcrowding, unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation, ideal conditions for breeding and communication infectious disease. Poor communities typically lack primary health facilities, essential medicines and vaccinations.”(People Poverty, 2002). This evidence supports that health is affected by poverty because in less developed countries, governments do not have the money to provide safe drinking water for the citizens. Water is essential to humans without it humans cannot survive. Stated by People, Poverty and Possibilities 2002,”The effect of ill health on productivity and earnings is like to be greater for the poor. This is because, among other things, low-paid, less educated workers are more likely to do physically demanding and often unsafe work in which they can easily be replaced”. This example supports the claim because less wealthy people often work in an unsafe environment and the work cause stress to their body. life.
Although people living in poverty are suffering they are the ones who truly chooses the paths they take.
In the article A Look Inside America's Poorest County Nomaan Merchant (2011) states,“Federal stimulus dollars are paying for the new hospital, which will create about 150 permanent jobs when it opens this year. Other federal contracts bring sporadic jobs, too”. This evidence proves that people choose their own path because governments created new jobs for the less fortunate. With these new job opportunities anyone that is willing to work can find a job. Although governments are making new jobs for people in need, people living in poverty lack the skills needed to be successful in making a living. According to Nomaan Merchant,“Poverty has loomed over this land for generations. Repeated attempts to create jobs have run into stubborn obstacles: the isolated location, the area's crumbling infrastructure, a poorly trained population and a tribe that struggles to work with businesses or attract investors.”(Merchant,2011). This evidence proves that people living in poverty do not have the education needed to find a job because they been living in isolation for ages. They live in rural areas and do not have an educated community to teach the new generation to succeed in life. People living in poverty do not the opportunities or as good of health as wealthy people, they live their life in suffering and never had a chance to make a successful
living.
