Areas of Growth
The journey of practicum while learning various key concepts of counseling was a blessing. It was an extremely fulfilling process where ethical, legal, clinical, multicultural, and self-care issues were discussed in detail. It is imperative to evaluate the performance during this journey and understand areas of growth.

This is one area that needs most attention and consistent practice. It will help in future to consider “mock evaluation” with a friend, classmate, or a counselor in order to manage professionalism and less distress. Nevertheless, it is crucial to manage emotions during evaluation and clarifying the areas of growth with the supervisor (Hodges, 2016, chapter 12, Section 1, para. 7-13 , exhibit 12.2.13).
Achievements
In practicum, through role-plays and discussions, I was able to feel confident and get a sense of achievement in my process to be a good counselor. Building the therapeutic alliance is a key skill of counseling. In addition, achieving skills of gathering information, conceptualizing the problem, planning the therapy, forming goals, and practicing intake interview by using counseling techniques for the purpose of instilling hope was a fulfilling process (Hodges, 2016, chapter 4, para. 2).
Nevertheless, through practicum, I achieved personal theoretical orientation. The role-play practices helped in understanding personal strengths by exploring integrative approach of counseling theories. According to Hodges (2016), “Functioning in the client’s best interests includes protecting confidentiality, practicing within your scope of competence, avoiding harm, avoiding conflicts of interests regarding your clients, and refraining from sexual and business relationships with clients, to mention a few” (chapter 3, para. 2). Learning about ethical and legal issues in counseling expanded my knowledge of rights and responsibilities of a counselor, and clients.
