The preceptor role cannot be underestimated; therefore, it is critical that the nurse manager can appropriately identify which of his or her nurses are capable of this rewarding yet challenging role. As I mentioned, those nurses who are willing to train other nurses with highest level in training, maturity and experience will make for an ideal preceptor (Mercado, 2012). I believe applying Herzberg's Two Factor of Motivation and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be incorporated in preventing preceptor burnout as it is the same concept in retaining your new hires as it would be for retaining your preceptors.
