1.2 Background of the Assessment
The amount of char land varies season to season, year to year shaped by normally flood water, river erosion and other natural events. The main char areas are in Jamalpur, Sherpur, Bogra, Shirajganj, Kurigram, and in Gaibandha.
The major economic activities of char dwellers are related to agriculture and cattle. Since the practice of choosing crop pattern is dominated by food security and the farmers do not know of any major cash crop that can be cultivated in char areas, they do not have enough cash to survive when there is no work or opportunity to work as daily labor. The land type and weather is very suitable for maize cultivation in char areas. Maize is a tropical/ sub-tropical crop. It grows best in sandy-loam soil with medium to medium-high topography (maize cannot survive water logging) in arid to semi arid temperate condition.
Maize is a relatively a new crop in Bangladesh with a time span of 19 years. Bangladesh grows moderate quantities of maize which do not meet domestic demand. However there is a huge potential for production increase. As part of assessing the maize sector in char areas, this report is to identify the root causes of constraints and opportunities on maize’s backward value chain development in Northern char areas of Bangladesh and also assess plausible recommendations in the maize input market.
1.3 Objectives of the Assessment
The broad objective of the assignment is to develop input market development intervention strategies for the maize sector based on field study in the chars of Bogra, Gaibandha and Sirajgonj districts.
