Dating back to ancient times, one could always find forms of discrimination and prejudice. For example, people born into royalty were viewed to be gods, whereas people of different race and religion were either persecuted or used as slave labor, the whole time being perceived as the lesser being. The reason for the perpetuation of prejudice comes from the beliefs and stereotypes a child is exposed to at a young age, usually parents or whomever is raising the child are responsible for instilling a prejudice mindset. Many factors influence a child’s understanding of prejudices, but most of the major reasons can be traced back to the individuals who raised the child or the people who the child looked up to or admired.
When a child is very young and is first starting to learn what exactly is present in the world, they are very susceptible to the teachings and beliefs of their parents. There are many reasons why prejudice exists. Some feel that their race is superior to others. An excellent example of this is when Tom Robinson exclaimed that he felt sorry for Mayella. Tom was then to be disrespected by Mr Gilmer when he announced, "You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?" (Mockingbird197). For example, an African-American male may have been reported stealing a VCR and some may assume that all African-Americans are thieves. For instance, "I knowed who it was, alright, lived down yonder in that nigger-nest, past the house everyday. Jedge, I've asked this county for fifteen years to clean out that nest down yonder, they're dangerous to live around ‘sides devaluin' my property." (Lee 175). It has always been human nature to fear something that…

In the past, people have either witnessed or experienced prejudice. It can be traced back to when women were not granted the right to vote, based on the fact that they were women. On the other hand, prejudice occurred during the Holocaust, where prejudice was directed mainly towards Jews. Not only did prejudice take place in the past, but it still transpires today. It is very common to hear the phrase ‘everyone is born with or clean slate’. John Locke (as cited in Allport (1983) believed that everyone is born tabula rasa which is translated to mean blank slate. If this is the case, then why prejudice exists in children from a very young age? Does this mean that prejudice is a learnt behaviour? In this essay, issues such as what brings on prejudice at a young age, what and who influences them will be discussed. Foremost, prejudice can be defined as having a bad impression on a certain group of people due to lack of knowledge or misunderstanding of those groups. When people don’t know much about something, they are inclined to believe the worst of it, thus leading to prejudice and discrimination. Brown (1995) defined prejudice as ‘a negative attitude, emotion, or behaviour towards members of a group on account of their membership of that group’.…
